Tribute

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Derek’s passing. He was a devoted, loving father leaving to mourn his daughters Riley and Peyton, and their mother Lori; his mom Marie; his sister Micha, and nephews Devlin and Logan; his many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his numerous friends, which include the Oak Fantasy Football boys and friends and co workers at Catalyst.  He was loved very much and will be profoundly missed.

Derek was born in Esterhazy, SK and the family moved to BC in January 1970.  He attended and graduated from school in Abbotsford, BC, subsequently attending University of Saskatchewan followed by attendance at University of British Columbia where he completed and received his Bachelor of Science degree.  Afterward, he moved to Duncan, BC working at various jobs until he began his career in Crofton at Catalyst Paper, where he recently commenced an Industrial Instrument Mechanic apprenticeship.  He was an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying football and baseball and liked to spend time at the gym.  He was a voracious reader and had a calm, assertive personality with an infectious, inspiring spirit.  He also enjoyed fine foods and gourmet cooking.  However, his prime focus and great pride and joy were his daughters, Riley and Peyton.

A celebration of Derek’s life will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 commencing at 1:00PM at the Quw’Utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre, 200 Cowichan Way, Duncan B.C. (across the street from Superstore).

Flowers are graciously declined.  Derek received a gift of life by way of a heart transplant in August 2012.  Please remember Derek by making a donation in his memory to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation of Vancouver, Heart Transplant Research, Room 178 – 1081 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 1Y6; or to the Heart Transplant Home Society, #209 – 15368 17A Avenue, White Rock, BC, V4A 1V3 The family would like to thank CDH Emergency, St. Paul’s Hospital, Royal Jubilee CCU, Cowichan Aquatic Centre staff and especially Dr. Pullan, Dr. McLean and Dr. Sanders for your love and devotion to Derek’s care.

Marie and family:
There are no words to describe my shock and sadness at the news that Derek has passed. I cannot imagine your pain. No one should outlive their children, or lose their nephew or father at such a young age. I didn’t have a lot to do with Derek growing up, being that I was so much older, but I remember a couple of family times with him…one Christmas for sure at Mom and Dad’s. I remember he always had a big smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Remember the good times. Try to take solace in the fact that he is no longer in pain. Maybe he is hanging out with Duane and his grandparents, playing cards or doing something else they liked to do together. I like to think he is. Thinking of you. Love Brenda

Dear Lori, Riley, Peyton and family,

I would like to express my condolences to you. I only had the privilege of meeting Derek once, however, he was so stoic and I could sense a strength and confidence in him that is rare to find.

I meet a lot of people in my line of work and sometimes regret not being able to better remember all the names of my students. I know that I will always remember Derek and feel grateful that I had the chance to shake his hand and chat, even if just for a little while.

Mel Burgess.

Relation: Graduated from high school together

My heartfelt condolences to Derek’s family. We graduated from Abby together in 1986. Derek sat behind me in Algebra 12. He was a genius! Always laughing and smiling. He helped me through a very challenging year. I was lucky enough to catch up with him through Facebook. Life is too short. May you be at peace Derek. You will be missed.

I’m so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing. My brother, Daryl, played baseball and went to school with Derek so there were many years where he was in our lives. I pray that there are many great memories that will come flooding back to you all as you begin to miss him. My heart hurts for each of you.

Dear Riley, Peyton, Lori and family
I wish to convey my deepest heartfelt sympathy to you on the passing of Derek. Saying good-bye to a loving father and friend is both tragic and painful.
When I read about Derek in Friday’s newspaper, memories of him bringing the girls to the traditional school flooded my thoughts. I recall Riley with dad at Cowichan Station and Peyton coming with her dad to my kindergarten class at Somenos Traditional School. Derek showed a caring concern in the development of the school and he was always interested in what and how the girls were doing. I recall Derek accompanying the class on field trips as a parent volunteer. When we set our classroom salmon free in the river and the children were feeling a little down Derek called out to our fish,“ Good-bye, have a good life and remember to come back for a visit”. This cheered-up the children and they all waved to the fish as they swam away.
One of my favourite memories of your family was the Halloween dance at Somenos when you all came dressed as a “motorcycle gang family”. This was so original and so much fun.
I know you all have wonderful memories of Derek and the times you spent together. I trust that these memories will help to sustain you in the days ahead.
I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and in my prayers.
Kindest regards,
Marlene Heitland
