Derek Hogg

March 10, 1969 - January 23, 2014

Tribute

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Derek’s passing. He was a devoted, loving father leaving to mourn his daughters Riley and Peyton, and their mother Lori; his mom Marie; his sister Micha, and nephews Devlin and Logan; his many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his numerous friends, which include the Oak Fantasy Football boys and friends and co workers at Catalyst.  He was loved very much and will be profoundly missed.

Derek was born in Esterhazy, SK and the family moved to BC in January 1970.  He attended and graduated from school in Abbotsford, BC, subsequently attending University of Saskatchewan followed by attendance at University of British Columbia where he completed and received his Bachelor of Science degree.  Afterward, he moved to Duncan, BC working at various jobs until he began his career in Crofton at Catalyst Paper, where he recently commenced an Industrial Instrument Mechanic apprenticeship.  He was an avid sports fan, particularly enjoying football and baseball and liked to spend time at the gym.  He was a voracious reader and had a calm, assertive personality with an infectious, inspiring spirit.  He also enjoyed fine foods and gourmet cooking.  However, his prime focus and great pride and joy were his daughters, Riley and Peyton.

A celebration of Derek’s life will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 commencing at 1:00PM at the Quw’Utsun’ Cultural and Conference Centre, 200 Cowichan Way, Duncan B.C. (across the street from Superstore).

Flowers are graciously declined.  Derek received a gift of life by way of a heart transplant in August 2012.  Please remember Derek by making a donation in his memory to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation of Vancouver, Heart Transplant Research, Room 178 – 1081 Burrard Street, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 1Y6; or to the Heart Transplant Home Society, #209 – 15368 17A Avenue, White Rock, BC, V4A 1V3 The family would like to thank CDH Emergency, St. Paul’s Hospital, Royal Jubilee CCU, Cowichan Aquatic Centre staff and especially Dr. Pullan, Dr. McLean and Dr. Sanders for your love and devotion to Derek’s care.

Riley & Peyton
Words cannot begin to express the deepness of the pain I feel for you girls. You are both amazingly strong little woman. Dad & I were / are both so proud of you. You two have endured more in your short lives, than most people should have to in their lifetimes. Dad will always be with you, watching over you girls and living with you every step of the way.

During times like this it is hard to look at the positives, but I could not have picked a better dad for you two to have shared your lives with. He was the most devoted loving father you girls could have asked for. He would sit with you guys for hours on end listening to you talk about the silliest stuff, and he was always so devoted to your school work and helping you succeed. Sometimes though he did have to enforce the ‘no horse talk’ ban… otherwise he never would have had time to sleep or eat. I will always remember him teaching your girls to waltz & the little routines you would work on in the living room. He loved you girls so much! You were his world & you gave him strength when he needed it most. As sad as it is for him to be gone from our lives, I think you are both lucky to have had a truly amazing dad for your 12/15 years, rather than having a crappy dad for 50 years. Let dad’s strength, confidence & determination live on in your girls. Stay true to yourselves and the wonderful little woman he taught you to be. He would want you to be smiling & happy. Nothing would make him more proud

Lori and family. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I just recieved your message today, as I am not an avid facebook user. I wish I could have been there to honour my good friend Derek. Even though we have lost contact over the years, I still look back on the great times that we had together – which were many. Derek was and will always be a special person to many people. He may have physically left us, but he has left an impression on all of our hearts and memories which will live on forever. Please let your daughters know that they can be very proud of their dad as he touched many peopes lives in such a positive way and the measure of a persons life is not in days, but rather how one uses the days thay have with others. Derek spent his days appreciating every one. I hope all is well with you and your family. Please take care and pass on my condolences to Derek’s family.

Relation: Grade School to Grad - Great Guy and Friend

When I think of Derek, the first things I remember are from grade school at Godson Elementary. He was lovingly referred to as ‘runt’ becuz of his size and last name, but he had more life in him than anyone twice his size. The second thing I remember is his lead role in Godson’s production of “H.M.S. Pinafore”. I remember how well he sang those difficult songs, (ie: I am the Captain of the Pinafore”)
He had a very strong personality. He especially startled us all at our first class reunion in 1996, when he came as “the MOST Changed”, as he had transformed from the ‘runt’ to a massive, muscle-bound man. He was tall, proud, and strong (both physically and personally)
He shocked us but wowed us. He had truly grown into himself.
I was shocked in disbelief when I first heard of his demise, as i could not believe it to be so. I hoped that it was not, but alas, God wanted to have him for better purposes I guess.
I am sad for his family, especially his children as they lost a great father.
Thoughts are always with you and he is always in our hearts.
God Bless. <3
