Wesley Lief Hegglund

June 11, 1960 - September 5, 2015

Tribute

It is with the heaviest of hearts that our family shares the passing of Wesley Lief Hegglund; taken from us unexpectedly in the waters off of Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island on Sept 5th 2015.Wesley was born on June 11th 1960 in Duncan BC, to parents Earl and Dorthy Hegglund and is survived by his father Earl, wife Angela, son Cory Burton (Staci), siblings Carl Hegglund Jr (Mary-Anne), John Hegglund (Amanda), Vicki Fenton (Tim), Maria Rose (Andrew); his nieces and nephews Aaron, Courtenay, Hannah, Tor, Dakota, Daniel, Max, Riley, Shelby, Jackson, Olivia and Demi; and great niece and nephew Lily and Easton.Wes graduated with an honours degree in Hard Knocks from Hecate Straight University; an institution reserved for only the toughest commercial fishermen on the westcoast. Through hard work and determination he attained his lifelong ambition of becoming a commercial fishing vessel Captain – a career he enjoyed immensely. He married his best friend and true love Angela in July 2000, and after moving to back to Vancouver Island they continued building their life together with their friend’s and family here in the Cowichan Valley.A Celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday 12th September 2015 at 2pm at the Crofton Community Centre, 8104 Musgrave. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wes’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wes's name are being gratefully accepted for the Crofton Sea Walk c/o the Crofton Community Centre.A lover not a fighter, Wes was and will always be, “the best man,” in his life and work. Loved by all who knew him, he will be deeply missed.

Dearest Angela;
It was with a heavy heart that I learned of the passing of Wes.
Wes talked about you often when he was offloading in Ucluelet. It was clear how much he loved you and how happy he was that he married his best friend.

Sincerely
Gord Perkins

I am so very sad to hear about your loss. Although I knew Wes for a short time, he was so awesome and fun to be in his company. There are no words that can express how you feel, but please know that there are many people with their arms around you at this time. Please count me as one of them.
Love

My father called me very upset and told me the news of Wes’s passing. I worked with Wes during the early 90’s salmon fishing on my father’s boat. Wes was the beachman and I was his skiffman so we spend a lot of time in between sets talking about life. My father “Scotty” was the captain of the boat and Wes’s brother Carl was our cook. It wasn’t easy being the captain’s son believe me but I always remember how Wes and Carl were always very kind to me. They both helped keep me safe every summer and for that I’m very thankful. It has been many years since I’ve seen Wes but I still remember what a nice person he was. Proud to know him and call him a friend. To all his family and friends, I’m very sorry for your loss. He will be greatly missed.
