Ruth Myhre

July 15, 1924 - February 20, 2022

Tribute

Sadly the Myhre family has lost our matriarch, Ruth Agnes Myhre (nee Godfrey), who passed away peacefully at age 97.  She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Harold, in 2009, and 5 brothers:  Robert, John, Jim, Gordon and Thomas (Tam) and 4 sisters:  Ellen, Mary, Margaret and Joyce.  She leaves behind her large, loving family:  Jim (Jan), their 7 children and 13 grandchildren; Janet and her 2 children; Debbie (Ken), their 3 children and 2 grandchildren; Les (Denise) and their 2 children and 4 grandchildren; and Larry (Jan), their 2 children and 2 grandchildren.  Ruth is also survived by her beloved sister Christine, as well as numerous Godfrey and Myhre nieces and nephews.  Ruth was dedicated to her family, always loving and supporting each and every one.  In recent years, it has been the great grandchildren’s visits that brought the greatest smiles and joys for Ruth.

Ruth was an extremely hard-working farm girl throughout her life.  She grew up on the Godfrey family farm, delivering milk door-to-door in Victoria before going to school in the morning.  She married Harold in 1950 and moved to Rose Valley, Saskatchewan.  In 1954, they moved to their dairy farm in Cowichan Station.  Ruth worked alongside Harold on the farm, milking cows, mending fences and feeding calves, while always finding the time for her children’s school, 4-H and sports activities.  She never stopped working even after Jim took over the farm, but they did take time to travel to parts of Europe including Scotland (Mom’s family) and Norway (Dad’s family), New Zealand, Australia, and the USA.  They put many miles on their camper van exploring Western Canada and visiting with friends and family.  Ruth was a quiet but determined individual, never wanting to be in the limelight but always willing to help out where needed, such as the Cobble Hill Fair and Cowichan Historical Society.  She adhered to her strong faith, and was quick to encourage and generous with praise.  Ruth loved playing cards and taking drives on quiet roads to see where they may lead.

Ruth moved to assisted living in 2013, where she enjoyed playing bingo and window shopping in downtown Duncan.  In February 2017, she moved to Oyster Harbour Seniors Community in Ladysmith.  Ruth resided there until her passing.

The family thanks Dr. Kilvert and the staff at Oyster Harbour for their warmth in caring for Ruth.  There will be a private family gathering at a later time.

From: Elspeth and Bryan
Relation: Aunt to Bryan

Ruth was such a lovely, gentle soul who always wore a smile. She was a steadfast companion to Harold and likely his rock and anchor. Both loved their family sharing pictures of them and showing immense pride in their achievements. They were always a joy at Myhre family gatherings and often the life of the party. Sad that Ruth’s passing marks the end of that era.

Our sincere condolences on the loss of your Mom. My earliest recollection of knowing her was as their paperboy for the times colonist. During some very cold winter evenings and on collection days, she would invite me in to warm up and give me a little snack. A very kind woman.
