Robert Walter Laver

January 26, 1946 - January 28, 2024

Tribute

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Rob. Surrounded by loving family he slipped away quietly. Beloved husband, father, grandfather (Poppy) Rob leaves behind to grieve, his loving wife Sandie, daughter, Kimberly (Sam), son, Shane (Jennifer), grandchildren, Shaun, Emily (Gage), Logan, Lucas, Landen, Kai. Brother Brian (Rhea) Laver, nephews and their families and Sandie’s family. Predeceased by his parents, Stan and Margaret Laver. Rob was born in Victoria B.C. on January 26 1946. While still a little boy, the family moved to Courtenay. After graduation Rob worked in the Government Surveying Branch scoping out parts of the highway that would eventually become the new Inland Highway. It was at this time Rob met the love of his life, Sandie. From Courtenay they moved to Gold River where Rob worked in the pulp and paper mill for just over a year. Then it was off to Duncan where he had been hired by B.C. Telephone. This turned into a 30 year career. During those years we started a family, Kimberly 1971 and Shane 1975. Rob was so very proud of his children and grandchildren as he quietly watched them grow into loving, caring adults. During those years of working for BC Tel. Rob was asked to be a director of communications for the BC Winter Games hosted in Duncan and also a director of communications for the Commonwealth Games in Victoria. Over the years Rob volunteered for numerous events. Besides his family and friends, Robs other love was the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department. He served for 36 years with pride and dedication. Starting out as a Firefighter and ending as Deputy Chief. There were many wonderful family events and along the way we accumulated friends that would last a lifetime. Rob leaves us knowing he was loved beyond measure and as his wife I was proud to walk by his side for 55 years. We will miss his advice, constant support, humor, unconditional love and his quiet demeanor.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Rogers, Dr. Henderson, Dr. Saunders and the kind, caring, and compassionate nursing staff at CDH.
In keeping with Rob’s wishes there will be no funeral service. There will be a small family gathering at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please if you wish, make a donation to a charity of your choice.

From: Phil Harrison
Relation: high school and car club

Rob has lived life to the fullest and made more than his contribution to community, with support from Sandi and family.

I have known Rob since high school.

I shed a tear for a very fine human being, and those left behind.

with love to all the family and in memory of a special gentle man, Rob, we were honoured to be a friend

From: Gregg McLennan
Relation: He helped me out of a jam

One cold, moonless December night in 2009 my dog managed to dislodge his tie out from our house and went on a jolly romp down to McAdam/Rotary park dragging 15′ of cable. I followed to the park and heard him barking in distress but I could not find him. Finally I narrowed it down to the pond. I knocked on a random door of the street backing onto the pond and by a miracle it was the home of the Lavers. I asked if I could cut through their yard to follow the pleas of my dog. Without missing a beat, Rob said, “Let me get my canoe.” Mrs. Laver got out the halogen lights to shine on the pond and we discovered my very naughty and somewhat contrite dog on a small islet in the middle of the pond wrapped around a lone tree. Rob paddled me out and I managed to unhook the boy and somehow we got him into the canoe and safely to the Laver’s yard.
I was overwhelmed wondering what on earth I could have done otherwise and how unbelievably lucky I was to pick the house of one so prepared as to make it look like an everyday event for him.
I bought a gift certificate for the Rock Cod Cafe and thank-you card in gratitude and Rob compounded his terrific goodness by returning the certificate to me stating he couldn’t accept it.
This is a terrible loss to your family I’m sure and the community more broadly but what a bright shining light for the time we had him.
