Patrick William Henry Solmie

June 24, 1944 - December 23, 2018

Tribute

June 24, 1944 – December 23 – 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, father and grandfather Patrick William Henry Solmie on December 23, 2018.

Pat will be greatly missed by his wife of 50 years Cheryl, daughter Dayna (Brad), son Derek (Tracy) and grandchildren Madelyn and Owen (affectionately known by his grandchildren as Grumps). Pat is also survived by his sisters, Judy Poilievre, Ruth (Jim) Turner, and sisters-in-law Valda (Marvin) Clarke and Lynn Gourlay, his Aunt Olive Randall, nieces Debbie Poilievre, Diane (Tom) Mahon, Melissa Turner and nephew David (Yanny) Poilievre as well as numerous cousins.

Pat was born on June 24, 1944 in the Ladysmith Hospital to parents William and Henrietta Solmie and spent the first 20 years of life on the family farm.  He developed a love for the outdoors at an early age that continued throughout his life, whether fishing, hunting, golfing, or walking with his faithful companion (Brie) along the Cowichan Valley trail, he always enjoyed being outdoors.

Pat was a devoted husband and father who spent countless hours at different horse shows or ball fields around the Valley.  Always willing to lend a hand, Pat could be seen holding horses or along the sidelines cheering with a smile.

Pat enjoyed a long and successful career in the forest industry on southern Vancouver Island.  He started working in the engineering department of Pacific Forest Products in 1965 and continued in the industry until retirement.  Pat conducted himself with the highest integrity and honesty in all that he did with his word being his bond. He developed many friendships both personally and professionally because of this trait and will be missed by many.

The family would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. M. Ibrahim and the support staff at Valley Medical, Dr. S. Coughlin, Dr. V. Masuda, as well as the army of home care support workers and registered nurses for providing care when it was needed most.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Agency – Victoria or the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society in his memory.

To Cheryl, Dana, Derrick and all the SOLMIE family,

Our hearts go out to you all. In many ways it’s hard to say goodbye, but there is also relief in knowing the battle is over, a battle not to be won and the suffering gone. Pat will always live in my memory as one of the “characters” one gets to meet in a lifetime. There were many laughs playing cribbage, hunting geese, walking, watching the World Series and just being together. His stories of the logging industry, salmon fishing and attempts at golfing were priceless and will always be grist for a smile when things seem tough and life starts to get you down. I cherished our last visits. Though words were not spoken, the sparkle in his eye said it all. May you all now find the peace you so richly deserve and I know Pat would want for you. Please accept our sincerest condolences and remember we are only a phone call.away if you need to talk.
