Madhuri Anand

December 16, 1932 - August 6, 2021

Tribute

Madhuri born in Amritsar, Punjab India on December 16th, 1932 passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2021 at the age of 87 from a brief illness.  She is survived by sons Rajan (Freeza), Romi (Harjinder), and daughters Vinita (Martin) and Aunjali, 4 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.

Madhuri along with her husband Bhanu and daughter Vinita immigrated to Canada in 1957 and called Duncan their home ever since.  Madhuri loved meeting people as she missed her family in India.  Along with her husband, she was involved in their community of Duncan through various organizations that included:  Independent Order of Foresters and Cowichan Intercultural Society.

Madhuri’s expertise in the culinary arts made her a local celebrity and very popular. For over 38 years, she taught Indian Cooking at Malaspina University College and various other locations on Vancouver Island.  She also taught English to new Canadians in her earlier career.  Teaching was important to her as she loved to share her talents with other people. Madhuri enjoyed boating and camping with her children and grandchildren.  She loved the outdoors and joined a women’s hiking group to explore her love for the island.

One of her many accomplishments included publishing a cookbook in 1998 called “Authentic Indian Cooking” from Madhuri’s Kitchen which went on to be a best seller for many years. This book was her dream and a legacy for her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Cowichan District Hospital and Cowichan Hospice for their kindness and compassion during her brief illness.

We were saddened to hear today that Madhuri has past away. It has been a tough road. Our condolences, we will miss her. 🌼

From: April A Sheehan
Relation: I live in Vernon BC and am the grateful owner of the cookbook (Authentic Indian Cooking) that Madhuri wrote.

The “Authentic Indian Cooking” cookbook that Madhuri wrote is one that although I have had for many years, only started really going through it and making recipe by recipe this past year. I decided to “google” today (after making the Palak Paneer once again and enjoying it for supper) to see if there was a website or more information. I was so saddened to hear of her passing. As her family, you can rest assured that for years and years to come, many kitchens around the country will be filled with wonderful aromas and many tables will be graced with delicious food made with the recipes she so generously shared.
