Lorraine Gann

November 18, 1932 - June 4, 2020

Tribute

GANN  – Marion Lorraine passed away at the Cowichan Valley Regional Hospital in Duncan, BC on Thursday June the 4th with her family by her side. She was born on November 18th 1932 in Ladysmith BC to Susan and Andy Potoma.

Lorraine had a lifelong career in the nursing profession that began after graduating from St. Joseph’s in Victoria, BC. After working in the in the hospital environment for a number of years, including the operating room and as a head nurse of the men’s ward, she diverted her attention to nursing instruction. She taught hundreds if not thousands of students over her many years with Camosun College in Victoria, and Malaspina College (VIU) in Duncan and Nanaimo. Lorraine most enjoyed making the rounds with the doctors, learning from them and the various specialists.

After being married for 30 years, she set off on her own; building her own home, and travelling the globe far and wide to such places as India, Europe, the far north and beyond. Mexico was always a favourite destination where she picked up Spanish as a second language.

Lorraine had a natural gift for language, music, travel, and gardening. She learned Slovak at home, then English when old enough to attend school, studied Latin, particularly Virgil. An accomplished piano player, and later teacher, always enjoyed playing in events especially when a travelling celebrity arrived from afar.

Calling her own shots to the end, Lorraine believed that we live on through our connections with others and how even minor things can have positive long lasting effects in others, particularly the disadvantaged.

Survived by her brother Gerry (MaryAnn),son Mark (Korrina) and daughter Tisha, grandsons Eddy (Kourtney) and Mason. Great grandson, Thomas. She will be missed by her many friends, but especially Frances Montgomery and Paula Douglas who provided excellent guidance and support for the last chapter of her life. The community at Oakcrest Townhouses was an extended family and Lorraine was always grateful for her opportunity to reside there.

Many thanks to all the hospital support staff at the CVRH 2nd floor, for which she felt made the difference, and made it like a second home to her. She loved you! Many thanks to Dr. Andrea Wilhelm, who provided medical assistance and helped Lorraine along her way. Also special thanks to Dr. AnnThompson, who was Lorraine’s GP for many years.
