Karl Schwestak

January 29, 1933 - April 11, 2013

Tribute

After a full and rewarding  life,  our loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbour passed away as he wished:  in his home with his precious family at his side.Karl was born in Frankstadt, Maerish Schoenberg, part of an area  known as the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia.   Being of German heritage he and his family were transferred to Bayern, Germany in 1945.   There he trained as a journeyman boilermaker.  He worked his trade with Krupp in Rheinhausen, Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1955.  He continued to work in the steel industry building bridges, dams and coincidentally, parts of the Port Alberni Pulp Mill.  In 1958, the love of his life, Dianne Elizabeth Horrex joined him in Winnipeg where they married, started their family and built their home.  They set roots in this community for almost 40 years, then retired and moved to Crofton, B.C. to play a more active role in their grandchildren’s lives.  Very lucky grandchildren!

Predeceased by his son, Kirk, Karl leaves to mourn, his wife of 54 years, Dianne, his daughter Kelly, son-in-law, Mike, and grandchildren Tristan and Natalie Wolter. The family is most grateful for the teams of doctors, nurses, in-home nurses, neighbours, friends and even strangers who through their acts of kindness, best wishes and prayers contributed to the quality of Karl’s last months at home.

It was always easy to talk to Karl, he had a genuine compassionate ear, and he accepted and championed people to be themselves.   With this in mind, in lieu of flowers, think of a charity that  touches your heart and make a donation to it in his memory.    He would have really liked that.

It is with sorrow that read of Karls passing. It was 45 years ago that you and your family became a part of ours. Remembering Karl with his smile, humour and love for his family.

From: Angela Brandson

I will always hold fondly in my heart the memory of Karl’s sparkling eyes, great sense of humor, his laughter and his many talents.
I am forever grateful to have spent time with him and Dianne both here in Winnipeg and in Crofton, B.C.
I will treasure the beautiful photo of Karl and Dianne (taken on their 50th wedding anniversary) that hangs on my living room wall as a constant remembrance of the special people (called friends) that I have been blessed to have known in my life. Another star is shining in the heavens tonight. A candle has been lit in his memory and another one will be lit on Friday. Fly like an eagle, Karl.. God Bless. Angela & Doug (Winnipeg)

I am happy to know that Karl was able to end his life as he wished – in his own home with those he loved most. He did have a good life and his pain is past. Rest in the loving embrace of God and allow the healing of your grief to take its own path. Know that you are all loved.
Bob
