Harold Bell

December 12, 1936 - March 19, 2021

Tribute

Harold Alvin Bell, born 12 December 1936, Chilliwack B.C.; died 19 March 2021 in Duncan, B.C. Harold grew up in Sardis where he delivered papers, picked hops and berries to finance his love of ice cream. He graduated from Chilliwack senior high in 1955.  His sister introduced him to his wife of 63 years.  After the wedding Harold and Shirley (nee Cope) moved to Port Alberni where he began his 37 year career as an assistant ranger in the BC Forest Service. He was stationed in Harrison Hot Springs, Langford, Echo Bay, Lund, Cultus lake and finally to Duncan. He loved driving the resource roads of BC and the intensity of wildfire suppression.

His family grieves his loss. He is survived by his wife Shirley and his children, Ken (Marie), Bruce (Sonya), grandchildren Matthew, Brendan (Justine), Nicholas, and Elena, and great grandchild Carson. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Ethel (nee Rushforth), siblings Norma and Robert.

He was an enthusiastic gardener, and enjoyed camping, horseshoes, shuffleboard, and winemaking. His favourite summer place was “the puddle” at Tuc-El-Nuit in the Okanagan. After retirement he and Shirley spent many winters in Yuma, and summers in their 5th wheel with other members of the Vancouver Island Trailer club.

He collected and battled many health challenges over the years and lived a full life to the end thanks to the great work of Dr. Robinson and Dr. Fretz.  Because of the Covid pandemic, there will no service at the time.

We send our sincerest thoughts and prayers for Shirley and the Bell family. Not only was Harold a wonderful person to work with, he was such a great teacher and mentor to so many of us in the BC Forest Service, over the many years he served our Province’s forests. A highly respected man, who will be missed by so many. Rest in Peace, Harold. Pat and Carol Hayes (Duncan BC)

Sincere condolences to Bruce and the entire Bell family. Harold was a wonderful person; kind, good natured and I’ll always remember him as a gentle giant. I enjoyed working with Harold over the years at the Forest Service. He was always so communicative and wise, with a great sense of calmness and balance in emergency situations. All the best to the family. My thoughts are with you.

Hi Shirley and family. Sorry to hear that Harold has passed away. I wish you all the best in the years ahead. I always considered Harold as one of my good friends throughout our high school years in Chilliwack. Harold was a gentle giant. Once we joined the FS , I always kept track of where you guys were stationed but our paths never were to cross again. As I recall you and Harold were an item throughout the high school years. Good to hear that you stuck together all those years of FS transfers and outposts.
Good memories.
