Douglas Warren Wellwood

March 26, 1938 - April 15, 2018

Tribute

Doug was born March 26, 1938 in Vancouver, BC.

He is predeceased by his mother Dorothy, father Warren, brother Ron and sister in law Josie.  He is survived by his loving wife Delia, brother Gord (Mags), sister Dora (Brian), children Debbie (Lothar), Susie, Lorrie, Nancy (Chris) and Mike, grandchildren Toni (Riley), Alicia (Jordan), Tracey (Aaron), Alexander, Katelyn (Matt), Dylan (CJ), and Marina, great-grandchildren Austin, Axel, Emma and Liam.

Working for BC Tel brought Doug to Duncan where he settled.  He worked there as a radio microwave technician for many years.  He continued to work BC Tel and later Telus where he moved to Burnaby for 13 years.  Doug retired and moved back to Duncan where he again became very active in the community.

He volunteered as a cub leader for many years, coached for CeeVacs, was involved with 3rd Baden Powell Guild, Heart & Stroke Walking Club, 744 Cowichan Air Cadets, CVSAR, CV Amateur Radio Society (VE7 AQW), Studebaker Club, Spirit Drummers, BC Forest Discovery Centre and many other local clubs.

Doug was a devoted husband, father, pa and GGpa who always led by example and was very active in every part of his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s lives.

Doug was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM) and valiantly fought it before he passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to hospice, the home nurses, Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Barr for all their kindness and support.

There will be a tea held at H.W. Wallace in Duncan on May 2 from 2-4 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charities of your choice.

“We thought we would spend the rest of our lives with you, but it turns out that you spent the rest of your life with us.  Thank you.  We love you and will always miss you.”

To all of Doug’s family I would like to extend my sincere condolences. Everyone in the Ham community thought very highly of Doug, and so did I. One of the best who will be sorely missed.

From: Susan and Axel Plath
Relation: Friends

Delia and family, we are so greatly saddened to hear this news. When we think of Doug, we think of a wonderful, happy, easy-going and smart friend. Doug and Delia were the heart of our complex in Burnaby for many years and promoted a neighbourly, caring atmosphere that made it a great place to live. Doug volunteered countless hours and was so generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. And who can forget those neon green socks when he rode his bike! His devotion to Delia was evident and he was always so proud of his family. We enjoyed his sense of humour and valued his friendship. Doug could not just deliver a notice of a meeting at our door, he would get a mischievous look and instead present our “invitation to the ball!”, an approach which inspired many others to volunteer over the years. Anyone who has impacted so many lives in such as positive way will never be forgotten.

Doug and I had many great discussions on electronics, amateur and 2-way radio at my shop in Duncan. His keen advise, which he freely gave was always appreciated. I always wished I had got to know him on a more personal basis. I give heartfelt condolences to Delia and family.
