Charles Buzz Powell

December 18, 1920 - March 10, 2011

Tribute

Charles Griffith Powell

Charles (Buzz) slipped away early on the morning of March 10, 2011, in much the same way as he lived his life; quietly, with dignity and without complaint.

Charles was born in Duncan on December 18, 1920 to Minnie (McFate) and Charles Griffith Powell Sr, and raised on the farm in Glenora that was homesteaded by Charles Sr in about 1910. The original barn still stands on McLay Road. Buzz and his older sister Dorothy attended the Glenora School, where their mother was a trustee. A rift amongst the trustees over whether to expand the school or not prompted the family to move to Gibbins Road in about 1929 so the children could attend Duncan Elementary and the old Duncan high school. After graduation, Buzz apprenticed with Mr. Highmore and learned the plumbing and electrical trades. He then ran his own business for over 30 years.

Buzz was a quiet perfectionist and a man of honesty and integrity. He loved nothing more than having all his family together. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, his farm, his gardens, his incredible woodwork, and his special pup Reilly.

Buzz’s life was touched with loss, having lost his sister Dorothy in 1971, two much-loved sons-in-law, Stanley Archer (1970) and Steve McInnis (2004), and two cherished wives, Louise (1986) and Claire (2008). He is survived by daughters Linda Falconer (Bruce) and Maureen McInnis, his precious granddaughters Angela Starck and Andrea Archer (Spencer, Jenna & Amber) and his great grandchildren, Ryan, Julia and Christopher Starck.

Our heartfelt and most sincere thanks to the staff of 2 East at the Cowichan District Hospital for their incredible kindness, care and concern for Charles. You are amazing people.

A private family service has been held. Flowers most gratefully declined. For those who wish, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society
