Carol Irene Casselman

August 19, 1945 - February 12, 2019

Tribute

Carol “Irene” Casselman, 73, of Duncan, BC, passed away on February 12, 2019. She was born to Clayton Badcock and Sarah “Frances” Mercer in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland in 1945. Her father died when she was two, leaving her mom to raise Irene’s older sister, Olive, and Irene, on her own. Frances found love again with “Robert” Percy Stone, and married him. Their family was completed with the arrival of their little sister, Joan.

Irene eventually left home in search of future endeavors and found herself in Ontario. She met her husband of 51 years, Doug Casselman, through a co-worker (who became her mother-in-law), and together they pursued their adventures. The promise of opportunity beckoned, and Irene and Doug moved to BC with their young son, settling first in New Westminster, then Delta, and finally retiring to Duncan. Along the way, they welcomed their daughter into the family.

Irene was a compassionate and kind individual who took pleasure in helping others. As a mature student, she went back to school to become a licensed practical nurse, fulfilling a lifelong dream to be a nurse. After retiring, Irene fed her passion to give back to the community by volunteering with the Cowichan Hospital Auxiliary. She served as President of the Auxiliary, and spent countless hours working with the HATS organization (Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store). She was truly happy knowing her efforts were benefiting a good cause.

Irene is lovingly remembered by her husband, Doug, her children, Alf (Tina) and Janelle (Robert), and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also fondly remembered by her two sisters, Olive Roach and Joan Dawe. There will be no service by request, but a Celebration of Life to commemorate Irene will be arranged for later in the spring.

“If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together,
keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.”

Dear Casselman family. immediate and extended.

I grew up with Mrs Casselman being a staple in our lives. She was a “Hero” of mine. She was my Brownie leader, and when she and I walked to Gray Elementary together, I felt so proud! It was like she was royalty (being that she was the leader).
I’m so VERY SAD about her passing. I lost my father a few years ago. He and Irene used to sit and have coffee together when my mom was working. Finding out about her passing congers the same emotions in me that were rampant when I lost my dad.
Just because we don’t see people from our past, doesn’t mean we don’t have memories or emotions for them. I wish I’d kept contact, but when they moved to Duncan I lost touch merely by distance.
God be with the family and know that she was someone’s hero. My hero……..
Goodbye Mrs Casselman, I admired you dearly.
Shawna
