Anne ("Dette") Bernadette Conroy (Petony)

February 11, 1934 - January 25, 2015

Tribute

She began as Anne Bernadette Pentony, born in Edenderry, County Offaly, Ireland.  She was born in February, on the feast of St. Bernadette, and was quickly called Bernadette and then lovingly nicknamed, “Dette”.

Mom had many loves in her life.  She loved to dance – competitive Irish Dancing in her childhood and waltzing in the kitchen with Dad later in life.  She loved music and there was always music in our house – loud, Celtic music.  She sang along to many of the songs from her childhood and taught us all the lyrics.  When Mom wasn't dancing, or singing, or tending to her garden – she was spinning a good yarn.  She loved a good laugh!  She may have only been five feet tall but she was larger than life and so were her stories.  She owned every room she entered – and she charmed every single person she ever met.

She charmed a man named Noel Conroy and after six short weeks they were married.  Soon after their marriage, they added Maeve to become a happy, complete trio.  The new family sought adventure and soon immigrated to Canada in 1967.  To their surprise, they added two Canadian Conroys to the clan – Julie and C.J.

Mom was a devoted wife and caregiver to her beloved Noel.  She was a tireless volunteer for the Alzheimer's Society of BC in her later years.  She was not only a mother to her three children but countless others by proxy.  She was a good, loyal friend to many – age differences never mattered.  Young and old alike wanted to be her friend.  If you have heard the stories, you know that we had the wildest, craziest, fun-filled childhood imaginable with Mom leading the way on every adventure!  Mom treasured us and our spouses, Cam, Jerry, and Andi – family and fun brought her more joy than any worldly possessions could ever have provided.

We know that Mom will always be with us.  She will live on forever in the stories we share about her antics and exploits….and she will be laughing along with us.  Mom, you have lived two lifetimes of fun in your 81 years.

You were so very loved by your family…and now Dad needs you.  He has been waiting. xo

Love, Maeve, Cam, Julie, Jerry, C.J., & Andi.

“In the end – it's not the years in your life that count but the life in your years.”  ~ A. Lincoln

H.W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre Staff send our condolences to family and friends.

From: Holly Cooper (formerly Holly Resch)
Relation: My daughters were friends of Maeve & Julie

I was so saddened to hear that Bernadette has passed away. I remember in the 70’s when my daughters Michelle and Sandra used to go to Conroy’s to play with Maeve & Julie. They always had such a wonderful time as it was an extraordinarily happy home because of Bernadette. I share the grief of Bernadette’s family.

From: Sandra Bird
Relation: Alzheimer's support group

Maeve,
It was a privilege and a delight to have known your mother. She helped me and many others through the support group.

Sandra
