Alan Hayden-Luck

January 17, 1932 - May 12, 2020

Tribute

Alan, at the age of 88, passed away peacefully at the Cowichan District Hospital. Al was born in
Victoria BC. His father Arthur Hayden-Luck, a Cowichan Valley man, and his mother Amy Eliza
Drake of England. The family later relocated to the lower mainland where Al grew up in Haney BC.
At 18 years of age Al moved to Regina to begin his career as an RCMP officer. Following training
he was stationed in Manitoba spending the rest of his distinguished career in rural towns, both
in Northern and Southern Manitoba. It was during this time he met his beloved wife Joan (predeceased)
and enjoyed 62 year of marriage to this wonderful lady.
After 25 years in the RCMP and a short stint in Public Service, Al moved back to his cherished
British Columbia settling in Duncan in 1987 where he continued his career in Public Service for
the Government of Canada. Al quickly barrelled into life on the West coast gaining many new
friends at the Cowichan Golf Course plus hockey and curling rinks throughout the Valley. He was
also known for his prowess at the poker table to which many area friends can attest.
Al was a great father and husband living his life with integrity, honesty and caring for his fellow
man. He was famously known to have given blood to an injured man lying next to him in a
remote hospital. That is an example of the many legendary things Al would do because he cared
about doing the right thing.
Al was blessed with four children Greg, Alison, Doug and Scott, six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
In addition, Al is survived by his brother Derek (Grace) of Ladysmith, his sister
Beryl of Vancouver and two nieces Genine and Barb and their families.
Special thanks to the Cowichan District Hospital third floor staff for looking after Al so caringly,
his doctors and particularly Dr. Roy Gilbert for keeping Al comfortable during his last days.
Please no flowers, but in lieu donations can be made in Al’s name to the Cowichan Valley Hospice
Society. A worthy cause that was near and dear to his wife Joan’s heart.
