William Grant

March 24, 1925 - April 1, 2010

Tribute

GRANT, William Ross passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Thursday, April 1, 2010, in Duncan, British Columbia, at age 85.
Known as Willie to his family, and Bill to his Canadian friends, he was born on March 24, 1925, at Fload Farm, on the Skibo estate in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, the son of William Grant and Jessie Ross Grant.
He served with the R.A.F. during WWII, training as a pilot in Saskatchewan, Canada. He married Sarah Margaret Bell Christie (Sadie) in Scotland in 1949, and emigrated to Canada in 1953 with his wife and their young daughter Eileen. They were delighted to add sons William (Bill), George and Anthony (Tony) to complete their lively family.
Bill”s life was dedicated to his family and enriched by his many friends. He worked hard, and lived life to its fullest. He was a consummate story-teller, and filled his days with music, especially through his love of the bagpipes, which he shared with his fellow pipers and his students. He felt blessed by the gift of song that was given to him through the beautiful voice of his wife Sadie, and he himself enjoyed singing, at family gatherings, and with the Duncan seniors” choir.
He has gone from us now to join those that left before him: his beloved wife Sadie, his infant son Roderick, his father William, his mother Jessie, his sister Jeanette and his brother George.
He is dearly loved, and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Eileen (Gerry) Shinkewski, his sons Bill, George (Lois) and Tony, his grandchildren Sarah, Kerri, Carlye, Bill, Laura-Ashley, Garret, Jessie and Terra, his great-granddaughter Katie, his sisters Kathleen and Anne, his nieces and nephews and their families, as well as his cousins and friends in Scotland.
His life was lived with great dignity, grace and honour. He was a man of exceptional character and gentle humour, and he was loved by all that knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held at Duncan United Church, 246 Ingram Street, Duncan BC, on Friday, April 9th at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC or the Altzheimers Society of BC, whose research and good works he supported.
