Tribute

SIMMS, Walter Henry

March 21, 1948 – March 2, 2010
Walter passed away peacefully in Duncan BC, with the love of his life, Loretta by his side. Walter’s greatest joys were his children: daughter, Deanna, (Terry) grandchildren Brandon and Rebecca; and son, Danny, (Siobahn) grandchildren, Kayla, Abigail, Eva and Ian. Also surviving are his sisters and brother: Pamala, Diane, Eleanor and Philip. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Walter joined the military as a young man, but a short time later, took his release. He went back to Newfoundland, married Loretta, and lived in Toronto briefly before re-joining the military and being assigned to the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry in Calgary. There began a 27-year adventure with the military that took him to Cold Lake, Baden-Soellingen, and back to Cold Lake where he eventually took his release. Walter and Loretta moved to Leduc and he worked for Spar Aviation for several years before retiring. He spent many happy days with friends and family there, and particularly enjoyed car club activities with his brother-in-law Randy. Although he thought he was retired for good, Walter’s love of children drew him to a part-time job as a school bus driver. The opportunity to live on Vancouver Island and drive school bus for School District 79, convinced Walter and Loretta to move to BC in October 2005. They have since made many close friends and are grateful for many other lasting friendships they made through the military and the Main Street Cruisers of Edmonton.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 2085 Maple Bay Rd, Duncan at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5th. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Walter to the Cowichan Valley Hospice, 3122 Gibbins Road, Duncan BC V9L 1G2. Online condolences may be offered at www.hwwallacecbc.com

Will certainly miss you, Walter!

Loretta, our thoughts have been with you and Dee and Danny these past weeks. Walter brought a lot of love and laughter with him wherever he went, and left even more behind. – Colin

Loretta – you’re in our hearts today. Walter lit up the world with his exuberant presence. We have lost a truly lovely spirit, but the memories he left with the people he knew will be treasured always. Robin.
