Tribute
Vellacott, Vernon Dean
September 6, 1936 – September 16, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vern at the Cowichan District Hospital, Duncan, September 16th, 2018 at the age of 82.
He leaves behind his best friend and loving wife of 54 years, Marlene , daughter Sheryl Doucet (Brian) in Mill Bay, son Richard in Duncan, son Brian (Jenny) in Australia and 4 grandchildren Justis and Jackson in Mill Bay, Brodie and Makayla in Australia. Also survived by Aunt Mary Vellacott, brother Garth Eugine Vellacott, sister-in-law Martha Vellacott (Mulholland) and many nieces, nephews, cousins.
Vern was predeceased by his parents, Ernest James Vellacott (1973) and Lillian Vellacott (1994), brothers Larry Dwayne Vellacott (1958) and Leonard Dale Vellacott (1965), sister Darlene Diane Welch(1975) and her two sons Gary and Clayton Windsor, brother Gerald Eldon Vellacott (2018), Vern worked for Island Processing for many years, retired when he was 55. Vern kept himself busy by doing his gardening, wood working, building birdhouses and selling them at the Duncan Farmers Market or Christmas Chaos. Vern was involved with the Duncan Lions Club/Housing Society, doing fundraising with the mints and volunteering at the Cowichan Capitals hockey team and the Sassy Lion Thrift Store.
Vern loved to go camping with Marlene, exploring the Island with their dog Sophie as well as they travelled to Australia twice to visit their son and family.
He enjoyed watching his grandson’s play hockey and baseball over the years.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gilbert and all the nurses at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Cowichan District Hospital for all you did for Vern.
As per his wishes, there will be no service or memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be much appreciated by the family.
Remember him with a smile today
He was not one for tears
Reflect instead on memories
Of all the happy years
Recall to mind the way he spoke
And all the things he said
His strength, his stance, the way he walked
Remember these instead
The good advice he’d give us His eyes that shone with laughter
So much of him will never die But live on ever after As we loved you,
so we miss you In our memory you are near Loved,
remembered, longed for always Bringing many a silent tear.

Marlene & family – my thoughts are with you in this sad time. I wish that we could have been closer as to get to know our cousins & their families better. I am one of Phil & Lillian’s daughters. Our family often talk fondly of our extended family and tried to keep current as to everyone’s whereabouts. The world was a better place having had Vern in it. Love to all.

To my Aunty Marlene,. My thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Losing Vern must be a pain more than words can say and more than a heart should have to feel. I have happy memories of him when I was a child and will always remember that twinkle that was always in his eye .
