Velma Francoeur

July 10, 1928 - May 29, 2017

Velma was born in Star City, Saskatchewan and is predeceased by her husband Clarence, her parents Emerson and Myretta, sister’s Freeda and Doris, brother Gerald, and grandson Lance.  She is survived by sons Brian (Dawn), Rod, and daughter Lisa (Rick), 7 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. In 1947, Velma married a handsome young man named Clarence, newly returned from service overseas.  In 1953 they packed up the car with their 2 young boys and began their new life adventure in Chemainus.  Velma worked at the local CIBC as a young mom and kept her family happy and home lovingly cared for throughout her life.  Velma traveled to many places but she was a homebody who enjoyed her walks, reading, gardening, and being a homemaker, touching the lives of the many people she met along her life’s journey with her gentle ways.  She was a happy, peaceful person who didn’t intrude but guided quietly from the background.  She was always excited to hear news of family and see pictures of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren – she loved her photo albums! She will be forever remembered in our hearts and exemplified in our actions. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the excellent and caring staff of the Cowichan District Hospital for the special care they gave our Mom, Grandma, and “Grandma Grandma”. A private family gathering will held to celebrate her life.

Sorry to hear of Velma passing she was the last of the Chemainus crew of Elsie & ED Stevenson friends .Now they are altogether at Happy Hour in the Big Place.

From: Cathy Harding
Relation: Velma was married to Clarence Franceour who was my father's cousin.

What a wonderful pleasure it was to meet and spend time with Velma. It was a very special moment when I was told by newly found Saskatchewan cousins that my dad’s cousin Clarence and wife Velma were living so close by in Chemainus since 1953. While it was very sad that my parents did not have a chance to get together with them when they lived on the island, I was very blessed to have known them both. What a special thing it was to walk into their home and have Clarence share memories of times with my grandmother (his aunt) and my dad and aunt and uncle from the east and all the many husbands and wives and cousins sprinkled across the provinces from the east to west coast. After Clarence passed on, I continued to keep in touch with Velma and her with me, by phone and visits to each other’s homes and happy lunches. We got on so well and it was so much fun to hear her stories of growing up on the prairies, stories of all the Francoeur children and her own Cowell family. What an amazing history. It was so special. We enjoyed sharing our family albums and putting names and stories to faces Velma knew and some that I knew. But, Velma knew more as it was mostly her generation. We had so many other things in common as well and I shall treasure our conversations always. She was very wise. Her work with the CIBC paralleled my own work with the RBC. We shared so many laughs of the early Chemainus CIBC and my work at the RBC in the Yukon. Velma dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was so proud of all of them and loved to talk about them whenever we met. I send my love and condolences to all of Velma’s abundant and loving family – locally and across the provinces. I know you will all miss her a million times more than I. That said, I shall miss her very much, too. It is not the quantity of time spent, but the quality. I am richer for having known her. Gentle wishes for a safe journey home, Velma. You are loved. Your “cousin-in-law” (Velma’s words), Cathy xoxo

From: Sherri Pepin
Relation: I was Lisa's friend.

I’m sorry to hear of Velma’s passing. I have fond memories of times shared with Lisa & both Velma & Clarence in the little house on the hill. I remember Velma’s quiet, strong, kind way of being towards me. Envisioning that the sweet memories shared with Velma will be salve to heal your broken hearts. Lovingly, Sherri Pepin
