Tribute

Valerie Alice Cornett

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Valerie Alice Cornett on Sunday, January 12, 2025 in Duncan, BC.  Val is survived by her children Brent (Christine) and Dana (James); her Grandchildren Braeden, Peyton, Lauren and Devery; her sister Lorna and her family; her brother Trevor and his family.

Val was born in Burnaby BC, on June 5, 1949.  She moved to Surrey to begin raising her family and then moved to Langley while working at the Hudson’s Bay Company managing the men’s fragrance counter.  When it was time to switch gears, she made the move to the Cowichan Valley to enjoy the Island lifestyle.

Moving to Duncan marked a new beginning for Val where she discovered a love for yoga, the outdoors, and hiking.  Val was fortunate to surround herself with a wonderful group of like-minded friends.  Often you would find her in the yoga studio, out on the trails, or travelling the globe.  Her love of yoga and hiking led to many travels including a pilgrimage across northern Spain on the El Camino trail, a trek through the Cotswold’s in the United Kingdom, and a retreat to a yoga ashram in India.

Val was an active volunteer in the community and often was found immersing herself in acts of service and support.  Near to her heart was her time spent at the Nourish Cowichan kitchen where she tirelessly helped prep nutritious food for school meal programs.  Val was proud of the impact Nourish had on so many children and families and spoke fondly about her involvement there.

Val was a loving mother who was immensely proud of her children and later of her greatest gifts, her four beloved grandchildren. She was always present at school activities and was a fantastic cheerleader at their extra-curricular events.  Of special memory are the journals she lovingly created for each of her grandchildren where she documented the time she spent with them from birth throughout their lives.  These journals and her voice will live on with the kids forever.

Valerie’s home was always welcoming and an inviting refuge. She loved to bake and unfailingly prepared a wide assortment of annual Christmas sweets; most notably almond crescents, gingersnap cookies, mincemeat tarts, and almond roca.  A visit to her home was a guarantee to over-indulge in her many freshly-baked confections, canned preserves, or fruit soup.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to her incredible network of friends who supported her during her final journey.  Additional thanks and recognition to the health community at CDH, VGH, RJH, BC Cancer, Hospice and the Hamlets and to Dr. Lorna Cutt and staff at the Festubert Clinic.

Val was a social person who loved to have fun but was also a private person and she wished for no public ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Nourish Cowichan or Cowichan Hospice House in her name.

val, you will surely be remembered by all of the Bay staff at Guildford and all of the cosmetic and fragrance reps. You were one of the originals before the department expanded. Your recipe for almond rocca lives on, for i make it every year at Christmas time but it never was as good as yours. Every year you brought enough to feed the whole department. We are just a few months apart and I think, no, not Val. You were and looked so healthy. I did not know of your illness. So sad.
