Tribute

Shirley Karr (1942-2024)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Edith Baines Karr, who left us peacefully on November 6, 2024. Shirley was a devoted mother, wife, sister, grandmother, auntie and friend. Her kindness, strength, and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Shirley was known for her warm heart, unwavering support for her loved ones, appreciation of beauty and for the grace with which she approached life’s challenges. She touched the lives of many with her generosity, wisdom, and an ever-present willingness to listen. Her family and friends were always at the heart of her life, and she took great pride in supporting and nurturing them.

Shirley was born in Chemainus, BC in 1942 to Edith Janet Silvey and Ernest George Baines Sr. She was predeceased by her son Mark Cocking, her sister Rose Valentine Head, and her brothers Laverne (Corky) Baines, Ernest Baines and Norman Windsor. She is survived by her husband Jim Karr, her daughters Shawna Karr (Greg Wong) and Mary-Lou Edwards (Richard Edwards), her son Barry Cocking, her grandchildren Jeremy and Travis Cocking, Grace and Linden Edwards, Alex and Trysten Kynaston-Wong and her sister Jane Marston.

The family wish to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Shirley and especially Dr. Postuk. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (cancer.ca) the Heart and Stroke Foundation (www.heartandstroke.ca) or Cowichan Hospice (https://cowichanhospice.org/).

A service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at 4:30 on November 16, 2024 at the Eagles Hall, 2965 Boys Road, Duncan BC. To be followed by a potluck dinner.

Shirley’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. She will be deeply missed. Her presence in our lives was a gift, and she will always be remembered with love and gratitude

You’re not supposed to have favourites but then Auntie Shirl wasn’t just your regular Auntie. Her kindness was a warm hug, her sweetness was better than any sweet you can imagine.
And when Auntie Shirl greeted you with “hello Honey” or “hello Beautiful” ….well, you just melted in her embrace.
I’ll miss you my darling Auntie

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Shirley Karr (Baines). I went through elementary and high school with Shirley in Chemainus. She was a quiet but thoroughly nice person liked and respected by all who knew her. From our property, overlooking the Chemainus estuary, we could see the house where Shirley and her family used to live on one of the outer islands. To get to school, in the early days, Shirley, her brothers and sister Rose, had to row over to the Sunders’ property and then walk about a kilometer up to the Horseshoe Bay Inn to catch the school bus. It was all taken in stride and I never once heard Shirley complain about the challenge of simply getting to school. I am sure this determination served her well in life. My sympathies to everyone.
