Tribute

Sangram Singh Parmar

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share the news of our father’s death.

Sangram Singh Parmar, born December 26, 1940, in the village of Panjora, District Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India.  Sangram was the baby of the family of eight children.

Sangram moved from India to Canada in 1957 and first settled in Duncan with his older sister Santosh.  He quickly moved to Vancouver that same year to work in the forestry industry.  He also worked in Williams Lake.  Like many from India, Canada was an opportunity to work in the booming forestry industry in Canada.

He then moved back to the Island and settled in Youbou where he worked at the sawmill. In 1966, he married Manjit Kaur Manhas.  While they worked hard to raise their family, they sold their house in Youbou, with three boys in tow, and built their forever home in Duncan (North Cowichan) on Marsh Road.  And they never left.  In 1974, Dad’s wish for daughter came true as Asha Rani Parmar was born.

Dad continued to work at Youbou as a lumber grader and eventual charge-hand at Youbou mill.  He loved Canada but made two trips back to India to visit his family.  Dad loved world politics and his daily chai and ludu.

Sangram is survived by his older brother Amrik, and older sisters Santosh and Kanta. He is also survived and dearly missed by his children, Shamindar (Sam), Satyajeet (Saty), Rajesh (Raj) and Asha-Rani (Asha).  Our mother, and my father’s best, friend, Manjit, survives the death of her husband of 58 years.  His grand kids, Taiga, Neyha, Andreas, Henrik, Nyan, and Amiya, are missing their “Baba” or “Nana”.  They loved him.  Daughter in-laws Siw Thomassen and Takako Parmar, whom Dad loved dearly, also shed tears of sadness and joy for having known him for the time he was in their life.  My father appreciated the ear and compassion you showed him.  We know this.

We miss you Dad.  We miss you Sangram.  Until we meet again.
