Sandra Mae Kell
May 10, 1943 - March 27, 2025
Tribute
It is with heavy hearts, we share that our beloved Sandy lost her battle
with cancer in the early hours of March 27, 2025.
Sandy was born on May 10, 1943 in small town Smeaton, Saskatchewan; she
was the baby of the family having five older siblings and right from the
start and knowing her as we do, it’s safe to assume she kept her brother
and sisters on their toes. Born in and for the most part raised in
Smeaton, Sandy left the farmstead and set out on her own at the age of
eighteen. She spent many years in Saskatchewan, working in different
jobs ie: highway crew cook, meat packing plant, fishing camps, one of
her many ventures was rising to the top in a household name company
“Tupperware”.
The early 70s would see Sandy making a new start first settling in
Honeymoon Bay, then in Lake Cowichan, and eventually owning and
operating her pride and joy, the Sunshine Gift Shoppe – aptly named so,
as she shared that her sister Ivy had fondly recalled how she “lit up a
room with sunshine when she walked in”.
In all Sandy spent more than 50 years combined in these communities and
she enjoyed curling, gardening, fishing, camping, and winning many a
prized trophy partaking in the yearly Logger Sports and Fishing Derbys.
She moved to Duncan, B.C. in early 2024. The weekend before her passing
was spent rooting for Canada and watching with delight as Team Homan
brought home the gold medal in curling. Many of us will also be reminded
of her love of knitting and all of her slippers in our homes.
Sandy is survived by her sons Kevin (Kim) and Jason (Miranda),
grandchildren Sara and Tyson and great grandchild Ella; sisters Anne and
Ivy, and many cherished nieces and nephews and friends.
Predeceased by her spouse Jack, mother Mary and father Harry, brother
Kerry, sisters Ina and Hilda.
The family wishes to thank the health care workers at Cowichan District
Hospital, in home care in Duncan and the many friends and neighbours who
helped out over the last few years.
A celebration of Sandy’s Life will be held in Lake Cowichan at a date
and time to be announced.
Interment will be at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Snowden, Saskatchewan
at a date and time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Sending love and light to Sandy’s family and friends. She was truly a character that made this world a much better place. Sandy and I share a birthday although many years apart but she always called me her birthday girl. I worked for Sandy years ago in the Sunshine Gift Shop when I was just out of high school. I loved Sandy very much. Fly free my friend….free of pain….free of worries….free of everything but love and light and happiness. See you again one day!
