Sandra Hunter

November 14, 1959 - March 9, 2010

Tribute

Sandra Patricia Hunter (November 14, 1959 – March 9, 2010) It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of a true Soul Sister, Sandra Patricia Hunter. Sandra is survived by her amazing daughter, Shiyana Alexandra Hunter and grandson Peru Edwyn Hunter-Wade. Sandra was an amazing fine and performance artist, as well as a business analyst, choir member and Dragon Diva. She had a strong passion for Food Security and was getting actively involved in local efforts to that end. Sandra received a degree in fine arts from the Ontario College of Art in 1985, as well as a diploma in entrepreneurship. She was a talented Business Analyst and Technical Writer, Developer, Web Designer and Data Modeler. She graduated from the Computer Systems Technology Co-op program at Camosun College in 2002 and gained reputation as a successful systems developer and web designer. As the inspiration behind Golden Geeks, Sandra provided computer coaching for mature users into the technological age. She was an eclectic mix of artistic and analytical balance which was mirrored in the vibrant way she lived her life. Her volunteer experiences over the years showed where her passions and politics lay. She sat on the boards of the Cowichan branch of the BC SPCA, Saltspring Hours, Heart Community and Economic Development Coop, Saltspring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse (SWOVA), and the Peterborough Family Enrichment Centre. She also contributed as a group facilitator and administrator to organizations like Transitions, Artspace, and the Saltspring Action Group. She was as passionate about her politics as she was about her art.
Sandra’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, March 27 first with a memorial ride commencing from the Valley View Shopping Centre in Cobble Hill at 1:00 p.m. followed by a gathering at the Moose Hall, 2244 Moose Road, Duncan from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. A potluck dinner will be held. . We will also be sharing live music, memories and dance together to celebrate Sandra’s fantastic Spirit. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share (including a list of ingredients) and dishes and utensils for their own use. Donations can be made in Sandra’s name to Cowichan Green Communities. Online condolences may be offered at www.hwwallacecbc.com

I was so sorry to hear of Sandra’s sudden, tragic passing. Although I had only known Sandra for a short time, she was an amazing person with a passion for life and good humour that could energize a room. Meeting Sandra at Hollyhock last year and sharing some of our hopes, dreams and desires for the future was inspirational for me. Sandra will be dearly missed by many of her AOL (Art of Leadership) clan who spent time with her last summer.
