Tribute

MOORE—Robert James (Jimmy) born in Brandon, Manitoba May 16, 1937, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Jean, son Ian (Clara) and grandson Alec. Also survived by siblings Blanche (Jack), Barbara, Beverley, Michael and sisters-in-law Georgina, Irene, Isobel and Evelyn as well as many much loved nieces and nephews both in Canada and Scotland. Predeceased by son Kevin, parents James and Edith Moore and siblings Patrick and Betty.

Jim, the eldest of 7 children, was eleven when the family moved to Drinkwater Rd, Duncan, BC. In his youth, Jim was a talented Trumpet player competing in and winning many honours in the Cowichan Music Festival and playing the last post at Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Graduating with the Class of “54 and after studying in Victoria, UBC, Boston and University of Alberta, Jim returned to Duncan to pursue a long teaching career. He always found time to volunteer as a basketball referee, leading school bands and directing school musicals. During retirement, he became a member of the Thrifty’s Sendial Team and he manned the Salvation Army kettle for 23 years at the Mill Bay store. He also tutored students when they were preparing to write the SAT exam. He enjoyed singing with the Cowichan Consort until recently, adding volume to the Bass section!

The family is deeply grateful to all the Doctors and nurses who took care of Jim. Thanks to Dr. Reimer for his exceptional kindness and care over the years.

Following Jim’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Cowichan Hospice.

From: Dave Dougan
Relation: Jim taught me what a good basketball referee was and was a supportive colleague when I worked as a teacher in SD #65 and SD#79.

My condolences to Jean and the Moore Family.
I am very sorry that Jim has passed, but I have nothing but great memories of him. When I was a young boy playing basketball, Jim would come out and referee many of our games. He was a terrific referee – he was fair, and as we were young, he always took the time to explain the rules in a pleasant and fair manner.
Later, when I became a new teacher in the Cowichan District, even though Jim was at a different school, he always went out of his way to say “hello” and it made me feel welcome in the District. I won’t soon forget his smile and the support he gave me in my “formative years”!! Thank you Jim!

From: John Bruneau
Relation: First met in Education courses at Univ. of Alberta 1965. Church activities, camping, hiking, travelling together, and visiting from Edmonton to Vancouver Island over the decades since, including our kids playing together when possible..

Jim, I will miss your unique sense of humour, your faithful character, your amazing memory even for the little details like annual birthday phone calls, and your enthusiasm for whatever you put your mind and efforts to. I will miss YOU.

From: Brian Harrison
Relation: I was a friend who knew and respected Jim for many years.

I was sorry to read of Jim’s passing. I very much respected Jim and appreciated his sense of humour and his dedication to any task he undertook. One could not but admire Jim’s willingness to assist when called upon no matter the request.
My condolences to Jean and the family and know that Jim had many friends and admirers who share in the grief of his passing. He will be truly missed by all who knew him and called him a friend.

To Jean and family: My thoughts are with you. We all sang together for so many years and enjoyed so much music together that Jim will always be with us all in memories of those happy times. Please accept my condolences and offer of a shoulder whenever you need it.

From: Linda Wallace
Relation: Mr. Moore was my teacher at Quamichan School

I have so many wonderful memories of being Mr. Moore’s student. He was my band teacher and I’ll forever think of him fondly when I hear the song ‘Sweet Caroline’. Mr. Moore also taught me enriched English for two years. He was such a dedicated teacher that demanded the best from his students. Best of all, I always felt respected by him.
I also want to acknowledge the trip to the UK that he accompanied us on. What an amazing chaperone- and we had so much fun.
My heartfelt thoughts to all of you.
