Reginald Allan Gould
Tribute
Reginald Allan Gould (Allan) passed away December 25th, 2024. He was born in Kamloops in 1942 to Hazel Mary Agnes Gould and Reginald Wallace Gould. He is survived by his wife Diana & his sister Patricia.
Allan led a varied life all over BC. He graduated from Kamloops High School, then attended UBC where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1966 and a Bachelor of Laws a year later. He went back to Kamloops to article and practise law. In 1970 he married Vera & became a stepparent to her 2 children Jacquie & Paul. They moved to Prince Rupert where Allan opened a law firm. In 1976 the family moved to California & bought a sailboat, Vera & Jacquie lived aboard for a time and Allan went to Victoria to find work. He became Director of Legal Services in the Ministry of Consumer & Corporate Affairs until 1979, when he was appointed to the Liquor Control & Licensing Branch, becoming General Manager in 1981.
In 1987 Allan & Vera moved to Vancouver where he practised law until 1995 when he was appointed a Provincial Court Judge, sitting in Nanaimo where he stayed until his retirement in 2013. He was known for having a relaxed court which proceeded efficiently and with humour.
After battling cancer Vera died in 2008. A year later Allan met Diana Cooper, they were married in their Ladysmith home in 2009, they later moved to Chemainus. Diana’s 3 adult children, their partners and 6 grandchildren rounded out many family gatherings.
Allan had an interesting life which complimented his many interests. He was an avid golfer most of his life and scored a number of holes in one. He was a voracious reader who liked to research arcane subjects for his own enjoyment. He had an interest in many community organizations, served on the board of the Ladysmith Maritime Association and Queen Margaret’s school. His heart, though, belonged to the Vancouver Island Symphony which he supported in all ways for over 20 years.
Allan suffered from kidney disease and was in dialysis for almost 4 years, this required treatment in Duncan 3 times/week. A big thank you to the many professionals who took care of him, particularly the Duncan Dialysis team.
Allan will be sadly missed by Diana, both of their families and many friends who loved his stories and his great sense of humour.
Allan’s departure on December 25 was a Christmas blessing as he was spared further suffering, he was surrounded with loving care.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Allan Saturday January 25th, 12:30 – 3 at Nanaimo Golf Club. Come & share your funny stories with this man who had such a great sense of humour.
If you wish donations can be made to Cowichan District Hospital or Vancouver Island Symphony.
