Phillip Roderick Devitt
Tribute
Phillip Roderick Devitt was born on September 26, 1937, in Vancouver, BC, to Edna Ruth and John Jackson Devitt.
In 1959, Phil joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he proudly served as a submariner—a role he spoke of often and with great pride, even recalling those days just before his passing while enjoying cookies with his sister. It was also during his time in the Navy, while stationed in Halifax, NS, that he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Anne. They were married on October 12, 1963, and together built a life centered around family, raising four children.
After leaving the Navy in 1969, Dad returned to BC Hydro, where he worked until his retirement in 1998. Along the way, he formed many lifelong friendships.
This shares the story of Dad’s life—but his true character was seen in his grin, his stories, and his lifelong dedication to his family and the community around him. He lived by the words, “No matter where life takes us, we begin and end with family.”
Dad loved family, fishing, and learning. Family was always at the heart of everything he did—from his early adventures growing up with his six siblings and cousins, to raising his own children, with lives filled with camping, fishing, and soccer, and later becoming a proud and devoted grandfather to his six grandchildren.
Dad never stopped learning, nor sharing his vast knowledge. He gave generously of his time and wisdom to many organizations throughout his life, including the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association, the Crofton Community Centre, the Crofton Senior Centre, the Crofton Seawalk, and the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron. As one citation perfectly put it: “Phil has yet to learn to say no. He has given his wisdom and guidance without reservation, and his time and support unreservedly.”
Phil was predeceased by his parents; the love of his life, Betty Anne; his youngest daughter, Christine; and his siblings Dean, Bruce, Dave, and Cathie.
He is lovingly remembered by his son Tim (Margaret), daughter Jennifer, son Rodney (Julie), and son-in-law Cory; his sisters Lynn (Jerry) and Ann; many nieces and nephews; and the great joys of his life—his grandchildren Tamara, Phillip (Cruz), Danielle, Dax, Cenna, and Megan.
Dad will be deeply missed by family and friends alike and remembered for his love of life, his devotion to family, his endless curiosity, and his mischievous grin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. In keeping with Phil’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.
