Patricia (Jane) Sara-Jane Hourihan (Newman)

September 11, 1940 - August 27, 2019

Tribute

Patricia Sara-Jane Hourihan nee Newman died at home with Ed by her side, in Duncan British Columbia on 27 August 2019.  Her sons James and Geoffrey were with her shortly before she died.

Jane was born at St Mary’s hospital in Montreal on 11 September 1940 to Nora and Frank Newman.  Ed was born there also 11months later but it took 20 years for them to meet although they lived within 15 minutes of each other.

After their marriage in 1964, Jane and Ed started their 54 year adventure around the world with a honeymoon in Barbados.  They soon moved to Barbados with James and only returned to Montreal for the birth of Geoffrey and later to allow Jane to finish her degree in Art History.  Chicago, Algiers, Paris, Dhaka, Addis Ababa, Manila,Vientiane, Phuket, Port Macquarie (Australia), Ripon (England) and Vancouver Island followed.  The boys went to school in England as schooling in Algeria left much to be desired.  Both earned Master’s Degrees and continue to live in the UK.

She skied, played squash, golf, petanque and lawn bowls.  Jane belonged to golf clubs in Ripon, Phuket and Wauchope and rugby clubs in Barbados, Manila, Vientiane and Duncan and the Canadian Legion.  Some of her happiest times were spent working at the British School in Manila, as president of the ADB Spouses Club during which she had a charity cook book published “AKLAT” and as a member of the Hash House Harriers in Vientiane.

Jane’s life did not lack excitement.  While living abroad she visited Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.  A week long journey to the Sahara desert with girlfriends and two Bedouin guides is recorded in Jane’s spectacular photographs.  She lived through martial law in Algiers and Addis Ababa, earthquakes in Manila and Christ Church, a tsunami in Phuket and annual typhoons in Asia.  She was admitted to hospitals that would be condemned in Canada, flew in very small planes with very strange pilots, ate in Michelin restaurants as well as on a small plastic chair next to a sleeping dog and an open sewer!

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Frank and sister-in-law Marie (George).  She is survived by her husband Ed and sons James (Kirsty) and Geoffrey (Belinda) and her adored grandchildren Stephanie, Quinn and Zoe, her brother Skeith (Danielle) and sister-in- law Kay.

Jane inspired friendship wherever she lived and Ed wishes to thank all who visited and wished her well.  Special mention goes to her knitting group who arrived at the house each Wednesday to chat around her hospital bed.

The family would like to express their thanks to Dr Masada and her palliative care team and home carers.  The funeral mass will be held at St. Edwards on 17 October 2019 at 4 pm.  A reception will be held at a later date.
