Nieuweboer Catharina

February 19, 1926 - December 11, 2012

Tribute

Catharina (Catrien) Nieuweboer passed away peacefully with family members at her side. She will be dearly missed by her family, especially Simon, her husband of 68 years; her children Trudy (Bob Rochon), Emmy (Bruce Sampson ), Lia (Murray Woods), Catrina (Steve Nezaticky), Patsy (Trevor Comis) as well as 6 grandchildren: Rob, Chad, Ben, Lia, Simon and Emily and 2 great grandchildren, Cara and Rogan and one on the way.

Catrien was born in Groetebroek, Holland where she met her husband, Simon. They immigrated to Canada in 1951 with their first born baby girl, Trudy. They settled in the Cowichan Valley and raised five daughters while finding the time to build two homes and maintain huge vegetable and flower gardens.

Catrien was a devoted wife and mother. Those who knew her benefited from her quiet wisdom and ability to make everyone feel special. She had an amazing sense of humour. She loved to hear us laugh and brought us together through card games, puzzles, and board games. The Queen of Ping Pong was wickedly strong from years of kneading bread for a family of seven. This led to many spontaneous arm wrestling competitions . A favourite family story is the time her twelve year old grandson decided it was time to test his mettle and challenged his grandmother to a match. He was quickly defeated and has still not lived it down!

Her precision, quiet determination and attention to detail was most evident in intricate knitting projects. Whether it was a Cowichan sweater or a complicated cable knit, we were amazed at how she could knit, watch TV, and keep an eye on five girls all at the same time!

The way she lived her life was a gift to her family. She gave us a lifetime of love, grace, generosity, gentleness, and humour. Dementia took Catrien from us a few years ago, but even under its debilitating influence, Catrien’s eyes still twinkled. She spoke with her eyes and her smiles. She still loved and was loved.

Many thanks to the caring staff on 2 South at Cowichan District Hospital and more recently, Sunridge Place which provided Catrien with a safe, comfortable home during her final months. Thanks also to Dr. Tom Rimmer for his able and kind care of our mother and us.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Edwards Church at 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan on December 21st at 12 pm, with reception to follow downstairs.
