Nancy Mills

May 2, 1952 - March 7, 2015

150511/13:15 Quamichan Lake  It is with indescribable sadness that I must inform Sothern Vancouver Island that:  NANCY ROBERTA MILLS (born 02 May 1952) died at Cowichan District Hospital on March 7th, 2015 of an unsuspected, untreated cancer which she was unable to overcome with the resources she had available.  She fought longer and harder than any of us knew or suspected and if we knew, we could have offered more and better support. Nancy hated to bother anybody even when she needed help.  In school, Nancy was the shy, wimpy kid who the brats and bullies picked on, however it turns out she turned out better than all of them, because she grew up to be beautiful, intelligent, talented and KIND.  It was my good fortune to share forty years of events, places and friends with her, especially music, musicians and other exceptionally talented artistic people.  Nancy’s father, Clayton Mills was an marquetry perfectionist, an electronic technician and an appreciative organist.  Nancy’s uncle, Don Kerr, was the local postmaster and a well-known musician and choir director.  Nancy, Clayton, and Don, all possessed fine keyboard instruments, and in their honor it is proposed to present a free memorial keyboard concert which will be announced in the future.  All will be welcome, especially people with a connection to the “older” music of their youth and loves.  I would sincerely like to thank the many people who have offered me their condolences and support.  We have all lost a lovely lady, supporter, inspiration and friend. Robert Paul Spleiter Duncan, BC 11 May 2015

Dear Robert. I am so sad to hear of your loss. Nancy was such a sweet and joyful person and this is a great loss to the local music community. She was such an avid supporter. It was a lovely obituary notice and my thoughts will be with you in this difficult time.
Love and sympathy Hope

We always enjoyed bumping into Nancy (and Robert) at various music events in the valley. We’d make comments on whatever was going on that evening and share other musical news — her presence always added a warm tone. Some favourite memories include meeting at wild jam nights at the short-lived but glorious Mellowside in Cowichan Bay and jamming with Nancy and others (her rhythms on the djembe adding wonderful texture) at numerous sessions in the basement of a mutual friend. Her sudden death is shocking and deeply saddening. Nance will be really missed — look for her spirit in any music you hear round and about the valley this summer.

I was so very sorry to see this in the local paper, Robert. While I did not know Nancy well, she was always a gracious, lovely and smiling person who will be missed by many. My sincerest condolences.

Condolences to Robert, family and friends. I had the pleasure of getting to know Nancy and Barb during our time as members of a singles social club in the Valley some 28 years ago. Shocking to read the news in the TC yesterday.
