Tribute
It’s with sadness we announce his passing, April 16, 2015 at Cowichan District Hospital, Duncan, at the age of 87. He was born in Gospici, former Yugoslavia, September 30, 1927 and immigrated to Canada in 1939. He is predeceased by his wife Vera (2008) brother John and parents Peter and Slavka, and many lifelong friends. He is survived by his daughter Joan Nellestyn(Dean) and twin grandchildren Alyssa and Justin, sisters Annie, Mary, Kay, Rosie and many nieces and nephews. He first started work piling lumber at 15 in Mesachie Lake and Honeymoon Bay mills and over the years worked at various sawmills in the area doing an assortment of sawmill jobs, even pulling logs out of the forest with horse teams. He also tried his hand with commercial fishing. The mid to late 60’s were a busy time as he helped build a new mill CIPA in Nanaimo where he became a Barker Operator until his retirement. He also met and married his wife Vera, and made their home on 7 acres on Gibbins Road and purchased a summer property on Protection Island. A celebration of life will be on Saturday April 25, 2015 from 1-3 p.m. at H. W. Wallace Cremation and Burial Centre at 5285 Polkey Road, Duncan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation to a charity of your choice.

On behalf of myself and the Hillcrest Lumber Company Employees Reunion i am sadly distressed to hear of Mike’s passing. I looked forward to seeing him every year at the Hillcrest reunion in Mesachie Lake. I remember Mike’s dad Pete and brother John as I worked with them and travelled on the work bus every day to work and back. My sincere condolences in your time of grief.

So sorry to hear of “Uncle” Mike’s passing. I grew up calling him “Uncle” just like Rocky & Tom. I remember visiting the farm as a kid with my parents, enjoying Mke’s hospitality and Vera’s wonderful cooking. My Mom, Sylvia and Dad, Mike loved your parents! Your Dad & Grandfather touched many lives and will be fondly remembered.
