Mervin Hohenacker
Tribute
(1941 – 2025)
Mervin passed away from COVID Pneumonia after a short stay in hospital. He had been living with dementia and getting weaker which contributed to his passing. Merv did not want to have to go anywhere but our home on which he had done a lot of work and loved, so this unexpected event enabled him to do that. He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Linda who loved him dearly.
Merv left home, the family farm in Alberta, at the age of 17 and worked in various jobs before going to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to become an auto body journeyman. He worked in Alberta for a few years at this trade then decided to come to BC for work where he met Linda while working in Duncan. They were married within the year and moved to Nanaimo where he continued in his trade. As a couple they moved to various places in BC to work and eventually Merv decided to sell real estate in Vernon. Then a move was made to Vancouver Island to further Linda’s education. Merv worked in various jobs to support this effort. After Linda graduated an opportunity arose to move to Australia, which opportunity appealed to Merv as he loved to move on to the next thing. Both Linda and Merv were able to work in Australia and spent a wonderful year exploring. Then came an offer to move to England for Linda’s work which again was supported by Merv. The two years in England Merv maintained the home and did a great deal of hiking. He always wanted to explore and this resulted in a lot of travelling around the countryside.
After this Merv and Linda moved back to Vancouver Island and lived in Victoria and Duncan area. This however did not end Merv’s desire to travel. Many trips were made in vans and a small bus that Merv converted to a motorhome. He was very handy at building and fixing things. He had a very inventive and artistic mind which allowed him to see the value in many things that would have been otherwise discarded. These things were to become works of art whenever he had time away from maintaining the home front.
Merv was loved and is missed.
A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.

Linda,
I will remember Merv fondly as a quiet person, but when he had something to say, was worth listening to carefully. The two of you introduced me to Kombucha! I send you my sincere condolences.

Dear Linda, I was saddened when I saw Merv’s picture in the obituaries this week. I always think of him as having a sharp wit and willing to share gardening tips. His recommendation to use page wire over the raspberry canes to keep them up and separate to reduce time spent attaching them to trellises and lines is a great idea. It does make picking easier.
I remember how hard you worked together to grow an amazing amount of vegetables, many that weren’t in the usual vegetable garden such as tomatillos. I’m glad that Merv was able to spend his time these past few years in the garden and home where he was happy.
Sincerely, Sherry
