Marion Greene (Armstrong)

Tribute

1946 – 2025

Marion Greene passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in Saskatoon, Marion was a woman of deep curiosity, fierce independence, and an unwavering sense of purpose. At the age of 17, she moved to a convent in Toronto to explore a possible calling to religious life. Though she ultimately chose a different path, that early journey was just the beginning of a life filled with bold decisions and rich experiences.

Marion began her career in education, teaching in a one-room school in the Kootenays where some of the students were almost as old as she was. After marrying, she and her family moved frequently across western Canada, including time in Prince George, rural communities north of Fort St. John, and Carmacks in the Yukon Territory. In Carmacks, a small village of 400 people, Marion had the opportunity to work with local Indigenous women, an experience that deeply influenced her world view and fostered her appreciation for diverse cultures. After a year in Whitehorse, she changed careers and moved to Calgary to be closer to family. There she completed her business degree and went on to become a Chartered Accountant.

In 1993, at the age of 47, Marion made one of the most transformative decisions of her life; She set off alone to volunteer in Botswana. She initially worked as a financial advisor at a vocational school serving young adults, where she assessed and improved its financial operations. Within months, she was appointed Director. Though the challenges were many, Marion approached them with humility, openness, and resilience, learning from those around her and always striving to do better. Three years later she moved to Francistown where she worked for Deloitte & Touche, mentoring young accounting students, managing HR, and continuing to share her knowledge and experience.

Marion’s time in Africa profoundly shaped her view of the world. She returned home in 1998, having traveled extensively throughout southern Africa and having gained a deep appreciation for life’s essentials: community, equity, and purpose.

Her last move was to Vancouver in 2002 where she worked for several clients. Her largest client was Eco Justice where she spent 13 enjoyable years working with a great finance team, leadership team and Board of Directors. She retired in 2019 at the age of 73.

She was a passionate advocate for justice and inclusion long before DEI became a corporate acronym. Marion had strong opinions, a compassionate heart, and a contagious laugh. Her stories captivated, her convictions inspired, and her presence left a lasting mark

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Tori Greene and Jenn Rowland (Craig), her granddaughters Camdyn and Carys Rowland, her sisters Rheta Mogus and Catherine Armstrong, her brother-in-law Perry Mogus, her brothers Warren, Lorne (Colleen), Derrick (Heather), David, and Dale (Sherry) and many dear friends, including Joan Hurley, Lynne Whenham, Carol McDonald, Oteng Bulikwe, Chilisa Ndlovu, and Len and Lois Ohlhausen. She was predeceased by her beloved grandson Skyler Johnston.

Marion will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her courage, compassion, and the joy she brought into the world.

We would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors of Duncan Home Care for how well they looked after Marion.

In lieu of flowers, Marion asked that donations be made to your local Food Bank.
