Madhuri Anand

December 16, 1932 - August 6, 2021

Tribute

Madhuri born in Amritsar, Punjab India on December 16th, 1932 passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2021 at the age of 87 from a brief illness.  She is survived by sons Rajan (Freeza), Romi (Harjinder), and daughters Vinita (Martin) and Aunjali, 4 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.

Madhuri along with her husband Bhanu and daughter Vinita immigrated to Canada in 1957 and called Duncan their home ever since.  Madhuri loved meeting people as she missed her family in India.  Along with her husband, she was involved in their community of Duncan through various organizations that included:  Independent Order of Foresters and Cowichan Intercultural Society.

Madhuri’s expertise in the culinary arts made her a local celebrity and very popular. For over 38 years, she taught Indian Cooking at Malaspina University College and various other locations on Vancouver Island.  She also taught English to new Canadians in her earlier career.  Teaching was important to her as she loved to share her talents with other people. Madhuri enjoyed boating and camping with her children and grandchildren.  She loved the outdoors and joined a women’s hiking group to explore her love for the island.

One of her many accomplishments included publishing a cookbook in 1998 called “Authentic Indian Cooking” from Madhuri’s Kitchen which went on to be a best seller for many years. This book was her dream and a legacy for her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Cowichan District Hospital and Cowichan Hospice for their kindness and compassion during her brief illness.

I am deeply saddened on the passing of Auntie Anand. As far as I can remember she was always smiling and greeted me with so much love and affection. Her sense of style and the way she carried herself so elegantly in her beautiful saris will be forever embedded in my memories of her.
I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories ❤️🙏

Auntie will always be remembered as “first class” no matter what the occassion, she would always ensure she looked her best, and chose her classic looks to match the occassion. She loved shopping and one of my fondest memories was helping her pick out a fine European leather jacket . She was so happy with her purchase and anytime I would meet her after that, she would proudly share the compliments she received when she wore it. I always enjoyed our conversations and recipe chats. I will truly miss you and will forever remember your beautiful smile. Your cookbook is a legacy and one that inspires me in my cooking. My deepest condolences to the Anand Family.

I am very saddened to hear of Aunty’s passing. From the memories I have of her she always welcomed me with a smile and sweet words, always. She was always very sweet to me whenever I would see her. She had this elegance about her that I really liked, she was just lovely. I wish I got to see her one last time. I know it’s been a long time since I have seen her. I hope she is at peace whereever she is now. Auntiji, I miss you.❤

The service was beautiful and everyone’s speeches were heartwarming. We feel so sad that we did not get the chance to meet Madhuri. We heard wonderful things about her caring nature and love for the family. We feel incredibly happy knowing Harleen was able to meet her and that they shared a special bond. Sending our deepest condolences. Thinking of the whole Anand family during this trying time.
