Sparks, Lorne Dale: 26 September 1935 – 9 March 2010.

If a life can be measured by the number of people touched, then Lorne’s was a life well lived. A pilot, a teacher, a farmer, the captain of his own ship, he followed his dreams and met life’s challenges with intelligence and heart. Lorne was a very proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand father. He loved his teaching career and had a great impact on his students, many of whom later became his friends. Lorne began life in a small prairie town and ended it in Chemainus, a place he grew to love. The people, the life-style, the ocean – he loved it all dearly. Lorne was a generous person who will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. He left life as he lived it – with dignity and an uncompromising integrity. We love him. We will miss him. Lorne, you will live on in our hearts and in our minds. What wonderful stories you leave us to tell. There will be a gathering held in Edmonton in early May. We were sad to read of the passing of our favorite teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School in Edmonton. My husband Jim and I were in his social classes for three years and in fact met in Mr. Spark’s class and have been married for thirty five years. He was truly a gifted teacher. We both speak of him often to our children. My husband was a social teacher for the better part of his teaching career …. inspired by Mr. Spark’s. My mom and dad heard what “Mr. Spark’s said” on a daily basis during my high school years and often joked about how often used that phrase when discussing topics of the day with them. He truly played a large part in forming our values and world view…. as well as both of us choosing a teaching career. He challenged us to be thinkers and doers and hopefully we have passed that along to our children. He will be deeply missed. Sincerely, Gail (Severson) and Jim Maher

It was with great sadness and sense of loss that I read of Lorne’s passing. He was my mentor as a new teacher at Queen Elizabeth and we shared many good times and long, deep symposiums. Farewell my friend, I can hear your laughter still.

hey Leslie, it is with a heavy heart that i am not able to make it on sunday. I hadn’t realised that Pat had a trip to Prince Rupert for work and he leaves on Sunday. Tried to figure out a way to do it, but with the kids it’s a no go.Been thinkin all afternoon about the many conversations Lorne and i had at the good old Gas Pump.He was definetlly my favorite, he always had the best sayings and good old Lorne-ism’s. One of my favorite that i still say and tell others is he said to me….”Sabrina, i”m an old man and i’ve had alot of worries….most of which never happened”. That is my favorite. He told me once of a girl that he taught in highschool that was such an extreme high acheiver, always working so hard. In grade 12 before final exams, he told this girl that if she didn’t skip at least once before school ended. He was going to FAIL her!!! I love that! Imagine how freeing it was for that girl! Imagine how wonderful it was to hear from one of her peers that it was ok to screw up! tThat you had to screw up to live.I put money on the fact that that changed that girl’s life, and that she will always remember him. I WISH i would have had a teacher like that! I might have went.He was such an amazing man, dignified, inteligent, funny. That man had more confidence in me than i had in myself!I will always love him for that.As i drink my red wine and cheer him way up there i can hear him say….”i’m just a pensioner on a fixed income” I hope he saves a seat up there for a drink wit
