Lois May Phillips

May 24, 1922 - February 25, 2018

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Lois Phillips. She is pre-deceased by her husband Jack to whom she was married 60 years. She leaves five children, Patrick (Anne), Carol (Terry), Eric (Joanne), Brian (Jane) and Jocelyn (Derek). She was very proud of her 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Lois led a very fruitful life and was a courageous and determined woman for almost 96 years. She shared a life of boating with Jack in spite of both of them suffering from polio as young parents. Lois contributed as a Girl Guide leader,  participated as a member of the Cowichan Trefoil Guild and was instrumental in establishing Heritage Building status for the Guide Hall.  Her passion towards the Forest Discovery Centre has helped leave a family legacy of forest history in the Valley. Lois loved to knit for her family and charity. She was a generous person and had a special fondness for elderly folk who she visited while she was still able.

Mom made Wedgwood House in Duncan her home over the last 10 years. She had many friends amongst the residents and staff, and was an enthusiastic participant in many of the daily activities.

We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to the staff at Wedgwood House and Dovehill House in Chemainus for their many kindnesses to Mom, and to Dr. Mark Sanders for going the extra mile on many occasions in his remarkable care and attention on behalf of our family.

At Lois’ request, there will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a donation to the charity of your choice.

From: Laurel Menzies

I am so sorry to hear of Lois’s passing. I knew her in several different ways – a friend of my mother Florence Donaldson (Taylor), as a Girl Guide Commissioner and thru your father Jack whom I worked with at Shawnigan Div. She was a very wonderful lady putting so much effort and enthusiasm into so many activities. She will be missed in this valley.

Dear Patrick, Carol, Eric, Brian, Jocelyn, spouses and families – so sorry to hear your mother passed away.

We have lots of memories going back to the January 1st family reunions that began in the late 1950’s celebrating Grandpa’s birthday, getting together at Deerhome and then at the Forest Discovery Centre, and your summer visits by boat at Deep Cove. I remember one summer visit in particular when Patrick carried Jocelyn, the newest member of your family ashore! Each Christmas we’ve looked forward to your mother’s Christmas Card, always recognized by its vintage stamps and always containing some interesting family memorabilia.

Please accept our condolences on your loss.
