Tribute

Dad was born in London England to James (1890 – 1974) and Mabel (1891 – 1972) Chown and immigrated to Canada (Saskatchewan)  in 1920. He was raised on a farm with his brothers Bob, Fred and his sister Winnie (Bridges). He came to Duncan in 1937 where he met Mum. Dad joined the 62nd Battery Royal Canadian Artillery and was mobilized September 1, 1939 later to be shipped overseas in 1941.Being in the 3rd division he landed on Juno Beach on D day. He always talked with much respect for the boys who didn’t make it home. At the end of the war he returned to Canada and made the army his career.

Mum & Dad (soul mates) were married November 1945 and had 67 happy years together. Two daughters Shirley & Linda were born during his posting to Cranbrook B.C. Most of Dad’s army career was spent in Ottawa. He was a Master gunner and received his commission as a Captain. After his retirement in 1968 he returned to Duncan having achieved 32 years of service.

Dad was preceded by his brothers Bob (2001) and Fred (1999) and son in law Roly (2003). Those left to mourn are his wife Vera, daughters Shirley (Mike) and Linda (Gerry) and grandchildren Greg (Carli) Sherra (Brent) and Celene, great grandchildren Delaney, Jordon, Grady, Justin, Anna & Emma.

We would like to thank our family physician Dr. Roy Gilbert for his kindness, caring and for always respecting Dad’s wishes. Also thanks to his friends, neighbours and four legged friends who made his daily outings so enjoyable.

Dad lived his life with dignity and integrity. A role model for his family. He will be greatly missed.
