Lawrence (Larry) Raymond Hopwo August 15, 1939 – July 18, 2025 Duncan, British Columbia Aged 85 Years
It is with great sadness that the family of Larry Raymond Hopwo announces his peaceful passing on July 18, 2025, in Duncan, BC, at the age of 85. Born on August 15, 1939, in Duncan and raised in Chemainus, Larry spent most of his life in Saltair, where he was known as a devoted family man, a tireless community volunteer, and a friendly face to many. Larry worked as a Chargehand and Scaler for MacMillan Bloedel and was the proud owner of LaRay’s Skate Sharpening, operating out of the Fuller Lake Arena. Generations of hockey players and figure skaters came through his shop, and he always greeted them with warmth and care. Beyond his work, Larry was deeply committed to youth and sport in the Cowichan Valley. He served as President of the Chemainus & District Ball Association since 1970, and was an integral part of establishing the Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey Association, bringing together the local hockey communities of Fuller Lake, Duncan, and Kerry Park. He also served as President of the Fuller Lake Figure Skating Club, always championing opportunities for young athletes. Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wendy Hopwo who he loved dearly. He was a proud and loving father to Linda (Ray), Gail (Charlie), Tracy (Scott), Brett (Jody), and Naomi (Gary). He will be forever remembered by his 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. Larry’s happiest moments were spent watching his children and grandchildren participate in the sports and arts they loved. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering support, and the love he poured into his family and community. Our family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and volunteers at the Cowichan Hospice House and Cowichan District Hospital, who made Larry’s stay comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s honour to the Cowichan Hospice House or the Chemainus & District Baseball Association.
Forever missed, always remembered, and deeply loved.
