Lawrence Doucette

August 7, 1938 - August 16, 2009

Tribute

DOUCETTE: Lawrence Thomas “Larry” – After a stubborn, long hard fight against various health issues, Larry peacefully went to rest on August 16th, 2009, at the Cowichan District Hospital at the age of 71.
With wife Marie (Boland) of almost 48 years by his side, Papa is survived by daughter Judi, his four treasured grandchildren Ashley, Travis, Scott and Darren Wiersma, son Glenn, and his mother Josie Doucette of Stephenville Newfoundland, his only sister Ursula in Arizona, brother Hilton in Alberta and brother Ralph in Florida. Larry is predeceased by his father Joseph Doucette, and brothers Francis, Anselm, and Isaac.
“Tom Cat” was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland on August 7th, 1938 and married Marie in 1961. They made the cross country move to Victoria in 1963, just after Judi was born. Larry started his work career in British Columbia pumping gas for a dollar an hour, but wasn’t allowed to answer the phone because of his thick French accent. Larry started working for Bapco Paint in 1965, the year Glenn was born. He also served as an Auxiliary Police Officer in Victoria, where he won various awards for his sharpshooting. He then moved his family to Duncan in 1974 to start work as a Redi-mix truck driver. “Froggy” continued on driving until his retirement.
Larry was an avid hunter in his younger years and enjoyed catching the odd fish or two. He loved stamp and coin collecting, and travelled to Newfoundland twice a year to visit friends and family, but mostly his Mother who will be 101 in October.
Larry belonged to the Maritimers Club, and was a member of the Elks (#69), and was a former member of the Legion and Lions Club. The family wishes to thank Dr. Murray Woods and the staff on 2 South for their care and compassion during Larry’s stay at the hospital. At Larry’s request, there will be no formal service. There will be a celebration of his life at the Duncan Elk’s Lodge, Duncan BC from 1 to 3pm on Saturday August 22, 2009. Donations may be made in Larry’s memory to the charity of ones choice. Online condolences may be offered at www.hwwallacecbc.com.
