Kathy was born in Westlock, Alberta to Peter and Agnes Key. She is survived by her beloved family, husband Rob Howes, daughter Erika Brown (Andrew), sons Craig Howes and Kurtis Howes, grandchildren Holden Brown, Amelie Brown and Aya Howes. Brothers George Key (Deborah), Lorne Key (Faye), Eric Key (Bonnie), David Key (Cindi), Robert Key and sister Ruth Lynch (Kevin), sister-in-law Gillian Ross (John), as well as special family friends Kate Goetz-Hilman and her son Remy, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents.

Kathy was raised on a farm in French Creek where she learned life skills that served her well throughout her life. In the summer of 1973, Kathy travelled to London, England to visit her dad Pete’s flight crew mate Jim Howes. Jim happened to have a son Rob and so the love story began.  Now it wasn’t technically a blind meeting since Rob’s sister was pen pals with Kathy’s sister who had sent Rob’s photo. It appears Kathy thought she could work with that. Rob soon moved to Canada in November of 1974 and he and Kathy were married on May 10, 1975. Seems a photo was worth a thousand words and 51 years of marriage.

Kathy loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was a truly innovative chef and enjoyed every minute of experimenting with new recipes. Kathy was highly self motivated and hardworking. After living in Edmonton and working in the imaging supply chain, following the family’s move to Langley, then eventually settling in Chemainus, Kathy transferred those skills to being an entrepreneur by purchasing the Great Canadian Dollar Store in Nanaimo as a joint extended family venture.

Kathy always encouraged her children to pursue their passions and fostered the entrepreneurial spirit in both of her sons. She helped Craig and Kurtis acquire the business acumen needed to start their own ventures. She encouraged Erika in her pursuit of a career in health care services.  Kathy was extremely proud of their accomplishments and continued this wise and supportive practice with all of her grandchildren’s adventures. Kathy’s children and grandchildren truly were her pride and joy.

Kathy and Rob’s home was always a hub of activity, warmly welcoming family, friends and the many furry creatures that passed through their lives.

The last few years Kathy was frustrated with the limitations her heart condition was imposing on her ability to keep up her energetic routine. While she enjoyed Yoga, taking it easy was not exactly in her nature.

The family wishes to thank the many health care professionals who cared for Kathy throughout the years.

Kathy’s exuberance for life, the love of her family and all in her circle will be truly missed. She will remain in the hearts and memories of all who met her.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 1 pm, Saltair Community Centre 3850 South Oyster School Road, Ladysmith, BC.
