John White

November 18, 1934 - April 17, 2020

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Papa and Great Papa John White on April 17, 2020, at the age of 85 years.  John fought a courageous battle with cancer and passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family.

John was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Rose (2015), his son in law Willi (2016) and his siblings Florence, Pearl, Shirley, Pauline, Gloria and Norman. He will be missed by his loving children, daughter Debbie, son Rick (Lori); grandchildren William (Vanessa), Amanda (Dave), Breanne (Tyler), Ashlee (Alex); his adored great grandchildren Jaeden and Ryelen; and brothers Ed (Annette) and Earl (Joanne). He will also be missed by his extended Turko family and friends.

John was born in Luseland, Saskatchewan on November 18, 1934 and moved with his family to Surrey, BC at a young age. John met Rose and married in 1961, moving to Duncan to start their family. He was always a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and would tell anyone who would listen how proud he was of his family. The White household would always welcome family and friends to share a meal and spend time together on the deck. John was known by everyone for his positive outlook and attitude towards life. John was very social and loved spending time with his neighbours for happy hour and social Sundays at Georgina Garden. He would be the first person to tell you he didn’t cook, so lunches at Arbutus Cafe became a regular favourite. John’s greatest goal was to make people laugh and smile. In his final weeks, he asked his family, “Isn’t it wonderful to hear someone be happy?”

In his early 20s he started his career as a tree faller in Lake Cowichan, BC. Falling trees and gathering firewood were passions throughout his life. For those who knew John, he would not forget to mention that he was a faller for 38 years and had a dozen stories for each. In his retirement, garage sales became a big part of his life. He would do his homework on Friday night and come up with a map for the following morning. He always shared his finds with anyone who needed them and it was commonly said, “if John doesn’t have it, they don’t make it.”

John’s family would like to thank home care support and especially his long time Family Physician, Dr. Peter Postuk, for his incredible care over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

“Dad we love you and will miss you so much, forever in our hearts.”
