John (Herb) Herbert Strom
November 20, 1934 - October 21, 2025
Tribute
John Herbert (Herb) Strom was born in Vancouver BC on November 20, 1934. He died on October 21, 2025, just shy of his 91st Birthday. He was with family when he died including his wife of 63 years, Joyce. Herb is also survived by:
His children, Lori (and her husband Louis) and Jodi (and her husband Thoralf), his grandchildren: Torsten (and his partner, Claire) and Soren (and his wife Bree), and his great grandson, Shea.
Herb worked in the banking industry all over BC for over 35 years. He eventually put down roots with Joyce in Port Coquitlam and had their two children. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Maple Ridge near Joyce’s sister’s family, Frank and Alma Pastorek. Once he retired, they moved to Vancouver Island to be near their daughter Jodi, her husband and their grandchildren in Cobble Hill. He will be remembered for his passionate love of all things Astronomy, Quantum Physics, Classical Music and political debate (always to promote his political party-The NDP.) He will also be remembered for his love of building beautiful wooden boats, a skill he learned from his grandfather. He was a generous contributor to the NDP and all their campaigns both provincial and federal. He also contributed to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Herb was a patriotic Canadian but also proud of his Scandinavian heritage and travelled to meet his extended family in Sweden and Finland with his wife Joyce. He contributed to his Cowichan Valley community in Cobble Hill by proudly serving on both his local water and parks boards. He loved his beer and Thrifties apple pie (As he used to tell us: “No substitutions!”).
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Cairnsmore Place for taking such good care of him in his final months. The family would also like to thank Dr. Zaan Davies for her dedication and compassion in caring for him in his final year. Herb specifically requested no memorial services, but his family decided to gather for a special, private dinner to honor his life on what would have been his 91st Birthday

Relation: Co-workers many years ago.
I was surprised to see Herbs obit. Joyce. I worked with Herb on two occasions, first with CAC then with BNS. After he went to the Cr.Union we lost touch. I have fond memories of some of the jokes he would tell as well as the storey about a “noisy fridge”encountered on your honeymoon. My condolences on your loss.
