John Thomas Martin

March 21, 1944 - October 17, 2021

Tribute

On October 17, 2021, in peace and with dignity, John crossed the finish line in full command of his ship on his last adventure in this life.
He leaves behind his spouse of 43 years, Linda Richter and a legacy of six amazing children/stepchildren-Todd Martin, Cari Richter, Chelsea Martin, Selena Martin, Rebecca Martin and Sean Martin along with fourteen grandchildren and his lifelong friend and soulmate John Higginbotham.
John grew up and was educated in Vancouver having acquired his degrees in education and law. He spent most of his adult life on Vancouver Island raising his family on a rural acreage in Westholme. He loved life and seized any opportunity for adventure. From hopping trains across Canada, freights across oceans, to travelling continents in vans, motorcycle excursions and his ‘ever-calling’ passion for sailing. His boats and the ocean became his sanctuary. This love of adventure provided many opportunities and adventures as a family and tales as a storyteller.
John was the ‘light of our lives’, master of his ship, a man full of humility and laughter and a skilled craftsman-full of resourcefulness and self-confidence to face life’s challenges. He was an amazing role model in his community, where he served as a Lawyer for 30+ years, and for his children – instilling important values that will carry them throughout their lives.

We, as a family, feel honored and privileged to have journeyed with John in this life and he will be deeply missed.

Words of wisdom he would leave with us are:

“Live Life To Your Fullest, But Live It With Passion “
“Carpe Diem”

Hello Linda

I was sad to read today that John had died. Some people you meet you wish would go on forever and for me John was one of those. As you may recall ( its been awhile )John and I didn’t practice in the same fields. John would be in Supreme Court one day on a divorce and representing the down trodden in Provincial court the next. I was mostly a business lawyer so on occasion we would refer clients to each other in our respective areas. Whenever we met I was always glad to be in John’s company and Those moments I treasure. I wish you and the children all the best going forward. Gary

SO sorry to hear of the passing of your spouse, father and grandfather! John was such a great community member and I both appreciated and enjoyed him. He was helpful to COS (now CVYS) when I worked there and was so approachable both to me as a professional and as a personal client. I enjoyed his humor and his down-to-earth and personable presentation. Such a loss and my heart goes out to all of you.
