Tribute
John Van Dyke Kinsella
March 25, 1946 – August 4, 2012
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of John Van Dyke Kinsella after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Survived by his beloved wife, Anna, of 46 years and their five children Lee Anne (Luigi), Dawn, Nick (Emma), Kyle (Lacy) and Jodi; grandchildren Amber, Josiah, Sierra, Imajica, Giuliana, Aidan, Lorenzo and numerous nieces and nephews. Also survived by his two sisters Marilyn Kinsella, Canmore, AB and Judy (Don) McCaffery of Kanata, ON. He will be sadly missed by his close friends Erle and Sandy, Joyce and John.
Van was born in Montreal, QB and was the youngest and only son of Nicolas and Ida Leona Kinsella. He met and married Anna in Montreal in 1966 where LeeAnne and Dawn were born. They moved to Kitimat, BC in 1970 where they had Nick and Kyle and then packed up and moved to Duncan, BC in 1973 where Jodi was born.
Van started his career as a lab technician in the aero space industry, worked for Alcan in Kitimat and moved on to his 36 year career as a bleach plant operator at the Crofton Mill where he retired in 2010.
He was very involved in his children”s lives, coaching or umpiring all of their ball teams. He loved to entertain and cook for his family and friends. He had a passion for music and fine wine and will always be remembered for his extensive hot sauce collection and love for spicy food.
His greatest love was his grandchildren. He was always there when they needed him. Each one held a special place in his heart. You could find him at school plays, on the beach, at the movies, dance recitals and often picking them up from school and taking them out for a treat.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Tom Rimmer and Dr. Stacey MacDonald for their exceptional care and support as well as the nursing staff on 2 South at Cowichan District Hospital. They would also like to thank Justin at Festubert Pharmacy, the Catholic Women”s League, Father Alfredo of St. Edwards Parish and the Cowichan Valley Hospice who stood by our family during this difficult time.
A mass will be held at St. Edward”s Church, 2085 Maple Bay Rd., on Monday, August 13th, 1:00 pm. Reverend Alfredo Montacelli Celebrant.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Cowichan Valley Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
To a wonderful husband, dad and grandpa, we will miss you.
Thank you for being a big part of our lives. You will live forever in our hearts.

Dear Mrs. K, LeeAnne, Dawn, Nick, Kyle & Jodi,
Given the time that has lapsed, I’ve no expectation that this note will ever be read but I felt compelled to write and offer my sincerest and most heartfelt condolences at the passing of Van. Having only recently becoming aware, I was struck by the strength of my emotional response and just how vivid are my memories of him. Please know that to this very day, his humour, kindness to me, and seemingly endless generosity of spirit loom large in my life; Van was wonderful.
Love,
Brett
