John Flynn
April 30, 1938 - April 9, 2014
Tribute
With his wife by his side, and the strains of “Over the Sea to Skye” in the background, the Rev. Canon Dr. John Michael Flynn died as he had lived, gently and peacefully, at the Chemainus Health Care Centre, on April 9, 2014. Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on April 30, 1938, John was predeceased by his parents, Agnes and John Flynn. He leaves to celebrate his life, and mourn his death, his wife, the Rev. Sheila Flynn; Sheila's daughter, Jane Marshall and her husband, Carter, with their children, Lane, Kendra, and Taylor; and Sheila's son, John Rogers, and his wife Jolene, with their children, Madisyn, Jadyn, and Jaxon. John is also survived by his son Sean, with his children, Ruth and Sean; by his son Stephen, and his wife Laura, with their daughter, Gillian; and by his former wife, Barbara Flynn.
John was ordained to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church on May 23, 1964, and was received into the Episcopal Church of the USA in 1972. He completed his Doctor of Sacred Theology at the Catholic University of America in 1970, and was granted an Honorary Doctorate by the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad in 2001. John became Professor of Systematic Theology and Ethics at the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1979, and also served as College Vice-Principal. For many years, John served on both the Canadian and International Anglican-Lutheran Dialogues, making significant contributions to both. The resulting full Communion between the two denominations gave John much joy.
John loved orange cats, golden retrievers, white bears, dark chocolate, and red roses. John's cats were a delight to him in his retirement, and he spent many hours with them curled up on his lap as he read.
A celebration of John's life will be held on April 23, 2014, at 2:00 pm at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Chemainus, BC, with interment to follow at the Chemainus Cemetery. Should anyone wish to make memorial donations in John's name, please consider contributions marked “Myanmar” and made through St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, 858 Mill Road, P.O. Box 463, Chemainus, BC, V0R 1K0, in order to ship John's theological library to be donated to the seminary in our companion Diocese of Myanmar.
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
