John Randolph de Weese
June 10, 1942 - February 3, 2025
Tribute
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of brother, uncle and friend to many, John Randolph de Weese. Randolph was born June 10, 1942 in Portland, Oregon
to Emily Nichols de Weese and Lawrence Everett de Weese. He passed away on February 3, 2025 in Duncan, BC, on the island he called home for half a century. He was 82.
John Randolph grew up in Portland and Salem, Oregon. He graduated from South Salem HS in 1960 and from Portland State (then) College in 1964 as an English major.
He was affiliated with the early Pentacle Theatre in a barn in Salem in the late 1950s through Dr. Murco and Dr. Margaret Ringnalda of Willamette University’s drama department. In 1964, he joined the Freedom Riders to help end segregation and register Black voters. He later settled in the Village in Manhattan working in the music and theater scene until 1969. From this date forward, John Randolph made his home on Vancouver Island.
Ran dedicated his life to his family, his dear wife, Margaret de Weese, who predeceased him in 2012, his friends, his community, and to his concern to help others. He was generous with all and loved sharing his vast knowledge and insight and he always had just the book or the historical reference you needed. He collected tools and interesting artifacts from everyday life. He loved birds, nature, and the restoration of habitat for the future of the Earth.
He is survived by his sister, Martha de Weese, his nieces and nephews, Libby Santella, Charles Donohoe, Kristin Coan, and Nicholas Coan. His siblings Everett Harter and Laura Bryan predeceased him.
There will be a memorial service to be arranged when the family can all come together.
We believe that Ran would have appreciated memorial contributions to Birds Canada or the Cowichan Maritime Centre.
