Joan Hayden-Luck

March 11, 1933 - November 15, 2019

Tribute

Joan, born in Leeds, England, immigrated to Canada when she was 19 years of age and started her long and active life in Manitoba – first in Winnipeg and then in many vibrant rural towns. It was in Winnipeg that she met her husband of 62 years, Alan, on a blind date at a skating party. Joan’s first job in Canada was working for the Red Cross, and as she progressed through her career Joan was always in a role of helping others and improving the lives of many. As Joan moved to several rural towns she always left the impression of being a warm and welcoming person that everyone loved. Joan and Alan eventually moved to Duncan, BC in 1987, and quickly settled into a new life on the west coast gaining many new friends at the Cowichan Golf Course, the Duncan Curling Rink, the Cowichan Theatre, St Peter of Quamichan and the Cowichan Lodge. Joan worked tirelessly at the Lodge running activities for the seniors and in the end fought vigorously to keep it open. Volunteering came naturally to Joan and she spent countless hours again at the Cowichan Lodge leading the Auxiliary in their work.

Joan was blessed with four children, Greg, Alison, Doug and Scott, six grand children, and three great grand children. She cared for us all with a loving heart and was the glue that bound us all together. Whenever we have had trouble in our lives, Mom’s words of wisdom “This too will pass” got us through those tough times.

Joan was the perfect combination of grace and humility while at the same time had a great sense of adventure and curiosity. We all learned beautiful lessons from this wonderful lady.

Special thanks go out to the Festubert Family Practice particularly her Dr. Maggie Watt, and to the Senior Out Reach Team (SORT) with a special thank you to Eileen Dirom. Both provided great support and care to Joan and to the extended family.

Please, no flowers, but in lieu, donations can be made in Joan’s name to the Cowichan Valley Hospice Society. A worthy cause that was near and dear to her heart. https://cowichanhospice.org

I have just read about Joan’s passing and wanted to share my feelings of gratitude for having had the opportunity to count her as a dear friend and most caring person in our community. I knew Joan from Resthouse Sleep Solutions where she took the time to visit me often; I will miss her coming by. Though some days were a struggle for her to communicate, by taking her time, Joan was able to share many a story with me, with us often ending up with a laugh and giggles. I was lucky to have had lunch with her at the centre around the corner, which was also fun, as well as having had a nice visit with her at home a while ago already. She spoke often of her children (some of you whom I have had the pleasure of meeting) and grandchildren, and it was apparent how much she so deeply cared for and loved her family. I am sorry for your loss and I am sending warm wishes to you all, especially Alan whom I have had the pleasure of spending short spurts of time with also.
