Joan De Verteuil

June 24, 1944 - May 20, 2015

Tribute

After a difficult, year-long battle, Joan succumbed to her cancer on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.  Born Dorothy Joan Galt in Trinidad, Joan was 70 years young when she died, surrounded by family at her home in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada.

Joan shared many wonderful memories with her friends and family before and after her diagnosis.  Her wonderful smile and caring positive attitude will be sorely missed by many.  Beloved wife of Ian de Verteuil; big sister of Jeffrey Galt & Jennifer Matthews; loving mother of Peter, Suzanne & Andrew; adoring Granny of Jessica & Blake de Verteuil, Benjamin, Nicholas & Evan Armour, and baby-on-the-way de Verteuil; delighted mother-in-law to Jennifer de Verteuil, Andrew Armour & Robyn de Verteuil; treasured daughter-in-law of Marcel (deceased) & Mary de Verteuil; cherished Aunty, sister-in-law and friend to many.  Joan has joined her deceased parents, Ken & Pamela Galt, in the loving embrace of her Saviour.  She will be with us always in spirit and will live on in our memories and our hearts.

After growing up in Trinidad, Joan attended Denson Secretarial College in England in 1963.  After a brief return to Trinidad, she moved to Toronto in 1966, seeking new adventures and it was there that she met Ian de Verteuil.  She was forever teased for moving all the way to Canada to meet a Bajan.  Joan and Ian were married in 1968 and together they had 3 children, Peter, Suzanne & Andrew.  In 1980 they packed their three young children into the car and moved from Ontario to British Columbia where Joan focused all her energies on her family.  When she felt her children were old enough, Joan returned to work as an administrative professional, working with the Ministry of Children and Family Services (and its various incarnations) for over 21 years.  Joan always had a positive effect on her workplace and was well respected by her colleagues.

Joan and Ian made many friends in the Cowichan Power Squadron and Maple Bay Yacht Club, spending countless nights aboard their boat (Bajan) in and around the Gulf Islands.  Camping trips with friends and family and playing with her 5 grandchildren were her other favourite pastimes.  After retiring in 2008, Joan and Ian made the most of their additional time together and in 2010 they took a 5 month camping trip across Canada.  Joan and Ian have been active members in the Church, always looking to contribute in any way they could.  Without his soul-mate and planner, Ian will be leaning heavily on his faith and his friends and family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Kim Grymaloski, Dr. Valorie Masuda, the staff from the Duncan Chemo Unit and the Home Care nurses for their compassion and support through this difficult time.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on June 6, 2015 at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan, followed by a reception in the Church hall.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Joan's Mighty Sparrows team in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.  Funds raised will go to research for gastrointestinal cancers.  www.conquercancer.ca/goto/joan_d
