Janet Green

December 4, 1943 - October 11, 2017

Tribute

December 4th, 1943 – October 11th, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jan Green after a brief illness.  Jan was born in Wiltshire, England, and was predeceased by her parents, Ray and Nancy, and her brother, Michael.  She is survived by her nephew Darryl, great niece Freya here in Canada and her beloved cat Nimbus.  Miss Green completed her professional training at the University of Southampton and held a Certificate in Education (with merit) from Weymouth College of Education.  She joined the staff at Queen Margaret’s School in September 1975 and became a well-respected teacher as she ran the physical education department and taught junior school subjects.  Before coming to QMS she taught in Surrey, England and at G. P. Vanier Senior School in Courtenay, BC.  Miss Green held Level I coaching certificates in both field hockey and English equestrian and participated in courses and workshops in the Language Arts for the Junior School.
She was on several occasions awarded the Brian Craig Memorial Award for the female coach who best epitomized the qualities of sportsmanship and fair play.

Jan was a keen horsewoman and was well known in the local horse community.  As a volunteer she served as Chairwoman of the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, became involved with Community Policing projects and was deeply involved with the QMS Alumni Association.  She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Queen Margaret’s School, 660 Brownsey Avenue on Sunday.

Jan was a unique personality —-much admired for her great love of all animals.

From: Joan Winfrey
Relation: Friend

Jan will be missed by many – she was a giver of help and kindness – a very generous soul.

From: Eve Savory
Relation: Through QMS and the Alumni Association

What a sad thing to read in the local paper. She was the Link that many of us Old Girls counted on to link us to the school, and thus to each other. She gently encouraged us to come to school events and wanted us all to love it as deeply as she did. I will miss her.

From: Lori Barekman
Relation: I graduated from QMS in 1978 and she was my PE teacher and hockey and track coach.

“Greenbomb” was a wonderful coach and teacher and I was very sorry to hear of her death. She embodied Servite Fortiter and her quick wit, big smile and large heart will always be in my memories of her.

From: Carol-Ann
Relation: Coworker and friend

On behalf of Cowichan Community Policing Volunteer Programs and Services, I extend our condolences to Jan’s family and friends. Sadly, I will not be able to attend her celebration of life due to another event scheduled the same day.
Jan was a Speed watch volunteer from 2005-2015 where she and her partner helped to educate drivers on speed, distracted driving and other road safety tips. She was a vital part of the Program team and her sense of humour kept the “boys” on their toes. Jan was also the Block Watch Captain for her street and extended her knowledge and desire for a safe community into her neighbourhood.
As she reunites with the volunteers who preceded her, we can rest easy to know there is one more road safety angel keeping an eye out for us.

From: Sheila Thompson
Relation: Friend and co-worker.

I worked with Jan on and off for the last5-6 years as a volunteer, She was unfailingly up-beat and always had a ready smile and a witty repartee. She will be sorely missed. RIP Jan.

From: Gillian Charpentier
Relation: I was a Student at Queen Margaret's School from 1975 - 1978

May you find peace as you go through this very difficult time.

From: Rosalind Coleman

I never met Jan face to face but she helped to reconnect me with QMS after I had returned to Victoria having spent many years working abroad. She somehow tracked me down and encouraged me to give a short history of my working life for one of the QMS publications. She also kept me abreast of all the events going on at QMS. I am sad to hear about her death and would like to send my condolences to her family. Graduating Class of 1963
