Tribute

Whittome, James Lawrence

November 3, 1929 – December 13, 2018

It is with great sadness we announce that our much-loved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, James Lawrence Whittome slipped peacefully away on December 13th, 2018.

Jim’s children Robert (Linda), John, Jim and Janet (Craig) , and grand-children Robert (Heidi), Graeme, Melanie, Kathleen, Emily and Sophie were cherished by him as well as step-grandchildren Chad & Linnea (Jason), step great-grandchildren Olivia, Kainan & Evan.

Jim married Dorothy in April 1983.  His step-children, Vaughn (Janice), Christine (Dan) and Grand-children Andrew (Tracy) along with great grandchildren, Kaye and Logan, Sheila (Cory), Nicole (Braden), Kate (Tanner) will miss him so much.

Jim was born at Kings Daughter’s Hospital on November 3, 1929.  His  89 years were a life well lived.  He practised law in Duncan when there was only a half dozen lawyers in town and was delighted when son Robert joined him 1990 and eventually took over his practise.  At the same time, he ran the family businesses, which were a big part of the City of Duncan.  He was respected and appreciated by all staff and clients.

His other love was boating.  He was a happy child fishing for shiners on his Dad’s boat the Elfine, along with his older sisters, Anne and Barbara (deceased 2017).  Later, when Jim’s children were young, they spent many happy times aboard the Genii.  In 1977, a new boat James 1 came into his life and he and Dorothy enjoyed exploring the coast to Alaska.  His last big marine adventure was a partnership with Jim and Julie Roome when they acquired the Songhee in 1991.  So many friends had memorable trips on her.

Jim was fortunate to be loved and respected by a large extended family and many friends, business acquaintances, clients and staff.  He will be missed.

There will be a family interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 18th, followed by a reception at 3:00 pm for family and friends  at Maple Bay Yacht Club where he was a Life Member.

Fondly remembered by Sue McKay…Jim was my grandmother’s lawyer…known and respected by me since the early 70’s and as a great landlord for the past 15 years. Many good chuckles shared.
